There’s 1,000’s of red grape varieties grown around the world making a diverse range of wines.

Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Gobally, there’s been a welcome shift away for cumbersome, overripe, high alcohol, oaky wines, to red wines made with more restraint and freshness.

Cannubi to the core! Savoury, dark, brooding, rich aroma with a hint of chocolate. You expect power from the nose. It comes through on the palate. Bold even tannins sit under a solid core of fruit that despite it’s generosity and richness has an elegance to itt. Something savoury layered in. Quite complete. I expect as the tannins resolve a little here and secondary development build this will be quite something. It has a certain harmony about it that rings true of great wines.

Cogno Barolo ‘Bricco Pernice’ 2017

"This is a medium-bodied Nebbiolo from a hot vintage with a ruby-tinged appearance. The 2017 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice shows generous inner fiber and richness with dried cherry, blackberry, plum and dark spice. Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore 2019

Red Blend | Tuscany, Bolgheri

The 2019 Grattamacco has excellent fruit, lovely harmony, very sophisticated. A richness that is beautifully weighted. The density of Bolgheri without being over the top. They use tiny wooden fermenters. From a maker's perspective small fermenters like these give you great feel and make it easy to handle the skins gently extracting as much or as little as you wish. 'The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero shows a medium dark garnet appearance with an especially focused quality of fruit. There is wild cherry and Japanese plum, but the Monvigliero cru also delivers crushed rose, earthy iris root, candied orange peel with clove and dustings of black pepper. Vietti Barbaresco ‘Masseria Roncaglie’ 2018

In my view the Barbaresco Masseria is the most under-the-radar wine at Vietti....The 2018 marks an important transition for the Masseria which is a trademarked brand, not a vineyard, named for one of the hamlets within the Cottá sub-zone where Alfredo Currado first sourced fruit for this wine in the 1960s. ‘A fresh, cool and more elegant array is comprised by notes of both red and dark pinot fruit along with background floral and earth suggestions. The succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavors are finer if less powerful, all wrapped in a lingering finish that progressively tightens up as it sits on the palate to the point that it becomes quite compact. The Fuligni 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine, and it shines a much-deserved spotlight on one of the most consistent estates in Montalcino.
