This Grenache from Heathcote received a few hours skin contact while being gently pressed, fermented without the addition of yeast to dryness in old French barrels and spent five months maturing on yeast lees. It is a delicately coloured rosé, fresh and fragrant of roses, red currant and cranberry with a fresh, smooth, dry, textured palate. This is the second wine we have made from this nearly 30 year old Macedon Ranges vineyard. The Glenhope vineyard is planted at 450m above sea level on the granite soil at the northern end of the region. The wine is made in the same way we make Bindi Chardonnays; destemmed berries go into the press and the juice is taken straight from the tray into the barrels, around 30% of which are new small French oak. The Heathcote Col Mountain Grenache project continues to gain pace. The rocky and steep Col Mountain vineyard is a fabulous site for this impressive variety. It's very un Sideways (the movie that prophersises Pinot Noir) to have a soft spot for Merlot but such is the purity and medium weight beauty of the fruit from Glenhope that the wine, when treated lavishly, is compelling. The Willow Lake has excellent depth and length, with the acid to match the fruit intensity. It needs the most time to resolve of Adrian's 3 Chardonnays. When it does it is going to be freaky good.
