Larger Bottles 1-15L

Sometimes a single bottle just doesn’t befit the occasion!

When you need to celebrate in style a magnum is the minimum.

Wisdom suggests the larger the bottle the slower the wine inside will age.

There’s another interesting factor when it comes to bottle fermented sparkling like Champagne. The fermentation ‘kinetics’ the way the wine ferments in magnum just seems to give the Champagne magnums the edge in quality over single bottles.

Maybe it’s just the party environment!

Here’s a list of different wine bottle sizes.

1.5L Magnum = 2 x 750 ml bottles.

3.0L Double Magnum – Jeroboam = 2 x Magnums or 4 x 750ml bottles.

4.5L Jeroboam (aka Rehoboam) = 6 x 750 ml bottles. (Jeroboam is either 3 or 4.5 L depending on what part of France you’re in)

6.0L Imperial (aka Methuselah) = 8 x 750 ml bottles or 2 x Double Magnums.

9.0L Salmanazar = 12 x 750 ml bottles or a full case of wine!

12.0L Balthazar = 16 x 750 ml bottles or two Imperials.

15.0L Nebuchadnezzar = 20 x 750 ml bottles or the name of the ship in the Matrix.

18.0 L Solomon (aka Melchoir) = 24 x 750 ml bottles.

Daniel Bouland Morgon Délys MAGNUM 2021

Gamay Noir | Morgon, Beaujolais

Super refined and long with the finish offering all kinds of florals and exotic spice! "Bouland's bottling from younger vines, the 2021 Morgon Delys delivers notes of plums, wild berries, spices and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's still a little compact after its very recent bottling. It shows plenty of potential, however." William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points

Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 'Vielles Vignes Sable' MAGNUM 2022
Ridiculous Yields!
I haven't had a chance to taste these and reviews aren't out yet. Given the consistency and the comments on the vintage below from Bouland and Morris they're just a no brainer. One of the wineries I buy from each year without hesitation. Expect them to have an extra degree of sophistication compared with other recent releases. Wine specific importer notes below. Even Bouland himself struggled to find fault in his wines from what is an outstanding vintage for Beaujolais. “I’m not co

I've yet to taste the 2018 Bricco San Michele. Given the quality of the Cavallina and Pitasso from 2018 I expect it will be delicious! I trusted friend in the know has devoured one and given it the thumbs up! Note for the 2021: Textural with clever use of oxidative handling to build intrigue whilst maintaining a core of vibrant fruit and mineral acidity. Citrus zest and oils with pears and a little candied ginger. White flowers dance over the top with a little savoury hit. Flowing and lus

Vietti ‘Perbacco’ Langhe Nebbiolo MAGNUM 2020

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

Two of the best value Neb's on the market have to be Vietti's Castiglione Barolo and this wine Vietti's Perbacco! Every year I put away a box of Perbacco Magnums! They make for a wicked party wine! The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is another terrific entry-level wine from Vietti. In this vintage, the Perbacco is especially fine. Sweet dried cherry, herbs, mint, crushed flowers, anise and orange peel grace this striking, alluring Nebbiolo. There's tons of depth and sheer pedigree, things

Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru ‘Forêts’ 2021

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

Stéphane Moreau called Forêts “…one of the greatest terroirs of Chablis.” It’s a historical sub-plot within the 1er Cru Montmains, located high up the slope and facing southeast. It can certainly produce Chablis of the highest order, as both Dauvissat and Moreau have shown many times (Raveneau also has a small parcel). Moreau farms two plots of vines here, over a total of just under two hectares. The first is alongside the vineyard of Vincent Dauvissat, and the vines are the s

Vanguardist ‘MVG’ Grenache MAGNUM 2021

Grenache | McLaren Vale, Australia

Another superb wine taking Aussie Grenache to a whole new level! "Raspberry steeped in liqueur, plenty of perfume, lots of spice, almond paste. Medium-bodied, raspberry and subtle earthiness, firm pumice stone tannin, lots of crunch, hazelnut and crisp red berries, very bright and long. Some tea and tobacco savoury stuff. Such an excellent wine. Structural but ripe. The quality of tannin is outstanding. Serve it in a big Burgundy glass! Drink 2024-2034." Gary Walsh TWF 97 Points

🇮🇹Bravo Isabella!👏🏻
The Robin has landed! Ar.Pe.Pe's blended Superiore 50% bold Grumello + 50% fine, delicate, mineral Sassella! The Pettirosso is a 50:50 blend of Grumello and Sassella fruit. Boldness coming from Grumello and delicacy with fine, mineral traits from Sassella. Try the Superiores from each of the sub-regions and you'll see these characters. The blend works beautifully. The wine has impressive depth and length. What really strikes me is the harmony. The wines are so together. Excellent acid is balance

“The 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes is attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, sweet berry fruit, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, it's deep and layered, framed by powdery tannins and bright acids. This has turned out well.” William Kelly, The Wine Advocate

Super fine of deceptive weight, complexity & transparency. It achieves one of the greatest feats in white wine: elegance with real depth and length, particularly mid-palate weight. with loads of fun. Excellent acid profile and flow. The balance here is impressive. Just delicious, very good, thirst-quenching. Great purity and precision, layered and full of personality. Another terrific wine from this address, the 2020 Viré-Clessé Quintaine exhibits aromas of citrus zest, white flo

As with the 2015 I found myself not really wanting to write tasting notes simply wanting to devour the glass! Although it was line ball between the 2015 Inferno and Sassella I always lent toward the Sassella as a personal preference. ArPePe have delivered a cracker. Sassella typically produces the most elegant wines of the three communes with Inferno next and Grumello the boldest. The weight of the Sassella is on par with the Inferno this year. This has excellent shape on palate. A nice step

JM Sélèque Solessence MAGNUM (2018) NV

Champagne | Champagne, France

Brut Nature wines by default have nothing to hide behind so the fruit has to do the talking ... JM's is positively SHOUTING! Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in November 2020 with two grams per liter dosage, Sélèque's latest NV Extra Brut Solessence is showing very well, bursting with aromas of white flowers, pear, crisp stone fruits and almond paste. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's lively and saline, with a pillowy mousse and chalky grip on the finish. William Kelley

Thought to be the oldest documented vineyard, the name “Im Weingebirge”, Wine Mountains, dates back to the 5th Century. The wines from this vineyard are known to have impressive depth and minerality. The soil is varied with loess on the higher terraces and deep topsoil over primary rock lower down the slope. The wine ages on its lees in old barrels, giving it a creamy texture to match the fruit and Grüner spice. **REVIEW OF THE 2020** Previously called Im Weingebirge, the 2020 Gr

What a way to start DOCG Barolo!

Massolino Barolo DOCG MAGNUM 2015

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Italy

Tasting this, my first thoughts were this was the best DOCG I'd had from Massolino! Tasting this, my first thoughts were this was the best DOCG I'd had from Massolino. Thoughts echoed shortly after by winemaker Giovanni Agnelli. The wine has a lovely line and length. Great purity, initially it seemed tightly coiled, opened quickly to reveal an enticing perfume, generosity of fruit, layering and savouriness. Add to that a little liquorice and tar. The wine has great harmony, depth and length. Jus

This became the Nikolaihof “manor” wine after a natural fermentation stop. Bright and intense on the nose, with aromas of minerality, wet forest floor, sweet peach, white flowers, and a hint of dry bread and honey. It fits perfectly with Asian and spicy dishes due to its light sweetness. Clear and intense on the nose, with aromas of minerality, forest floor, sweet peach, white flowers and a hint of dry bread and honey with a slightly sweet aftertaste. **DUE MID-2024**

Nikolaihof’s Fiederspiel level the middle ripeness of the classifications. Vom Stein: This site is a sub-site of the larger Silberbichel vineyard. Located south east of the village, this is just 5.25 Ha and is a slight incline, sloping east, on the easternmost border of the Silberbichel vineyard.  The soils are gneiss with mica inclusions; there is a layer of loess and topsoil here – 60-120cm before you start to hit primary rock. Nikolaihof is the only winery to bottle this site on it
