Monteraponi Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Il Campitello’ 2016

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is dark, powerful and super-expressive. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and menthol infuse this decidedly brooding, potent Riserva. A touch of new oak adds sweetness without being intrusive. Ample and strapping in feel, the 2016 could use a few more years in bottle to be at its best, but it is super-impressive, even today. Fèlsina Chianti Classio Riserva DOCG ‘Rancia’ 2017

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can't wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.

Fèlsina ‘Fontalloro’ IGT 2017

Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting. Antonio Galloni

Brancaia Il Blu 2016

Brancaia's Il Blu is gorgeous in 2016. Fresh, perfumed and beautifully lifted, the 2016 strikes a captivating balance between power and finesse. Red cherry, flowers, mint, cinnamon and blood orange all give the 2016 brightness and vitality, and yet there is plenty of the richness readers have come to expect from this wine as well. The 2016 is one of the more polished, nuanced vintages of Brancaia I can remember tasting. Antonio Galloni

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2018

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is quite possibly the most elegant, refined version of this wine I have ever tasted. It does not offer the immediacy or impact of either the 2015 or 2016, but, instead, impresses with its elegance, persistence and total class. Bright floral and spice notes add perfume to a core of red-toned fruit. The 2018 represents another move towards greater finesse at Fontodi. It spent a year in French oak barrel and a second year in cask. Antonio

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2017

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barr
