This Grenache from Heathcote received a few hours skin contact while being gently pressed, fermented without the addition of yeast to dryness in old French barrels and spent five months maturing on yeast lees. It is a delicately coloured rosé, fresh and fragrant of roses, red currant and cranberry with a fresh, smooth, dry, textured palate. This is the second wine we have made from this nearly 30 year old Macedon Ranges vineyard. The Glenhope vineyard is planted at 450m above sea level on the granite soil at the northern end of the region. The wine is made in the same way we make Bindi Chardonnays; destemmed berries go into the press and the juice is taken straight from the tray into the barrels, around 30% of which are new small French oak. In 2014 we began making experimental ferments using four clones from this exciting vineyard and decided to mature the blended bottled wines until we felt they were settled and singing. The 2023 Block 8 begins with sweet fruits; red and dark cherry and red plum. Rhubarb and undergrowth appear with creaminess and brown spices adding additional complexity. Darshan like low cropping levels provide for a palate that is full to begin, creamy, silky, seamless in tannin flow, very long and structured. The emphatic and deliciously satisfying palate rolls on and on. It will improve for seven years and hold for that time again at the least. Michael D
Pinot Noir from Macedon, Victoria
The 2024 Darshan comes from similarly tiny cropping levels in a warmer season. The nose is lifted by sweet red fruits with some darker fruits working with the undergrowth It is very complex. The palate is fresh and creamy, energetic, chewy, vigorous, seamless and flowing. It will continue to build complexity and suppleness over six plus years and live well beyond. Michael D
