Forjas del Salnés ‘Leirana’ Albariño 2021

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

Loads of intrigue. Super saline with sherbety citric acid hit. Building development to the fruit with seamlessly layered in oak time & complexing lees work offering up plenty of interest at the price point. Fresh, thirst-quenching delicious drinking. Fun and playful. The 2021 Leirana feels classical, with the Salnés accent, freshness and some austerity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak foudre (80% of the volume), where the wine matured for six months. They have reversed the p

Pentecostés Varietales 2022

White Blend | Spain, Condado do Tea

Great drinking to be had here! Complexed by savoury and earthy layers with a little baking spice & hint of soft green herb. Textural with fine phenolics adding a caressing flow countered by a chalky play. Loads of fun. Laced with an elegant background funk over a delicate, transparent fruit core of depth & length. Excellent development heading down a very savoury line with a little shroomy funk that you often get in wines with this acid profile. That fine sherbety citric acid feel here too. The fruit builds, an excellent core of length and a balance of textural phenolics. Sating thirst with a lythe, transparent palate. Loads of tension, drinking beautifully now. A couple of years in bottle will see more on offer. It’s a wine that sits comfortably in its own skin. A sign that it’s maker does lik

Zárate Albariño ‘El Palomar’ 2021

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

170 year old pre-phylloxera vines. Skin contact and oxidative handling are beautifully balanced. Savoury and earthy with that Albariño fresh green herb hit. Fascinating to watch it freshen in the glass, bruised apple falls away & the fruit shines. A fine phenolic grip & spice from the skin contact add intrigue. Opens beautifully on both nose and palate over several hours, intensity builds & it flows gracefully. Keeps getting fresher, and fresher. A clear sign of quality f

Zárate Albariño ‘Balado’ 2021

Albariño | Val do Salnés, Galicia

Moving up to the top end of Zárate’s Albariño The Balado shows a build in depth, richness and complexity. A clever élévage shows a nice little bit of oxidative development that has been tamed to be super fresh. The textural elements ramp up to match the depth and a perceived lower acidity (still loads there). Crisp, flowing, chalky, saline minerality. White flowers on insane lemons, a little hazelnut & very subtle mapple hit with discrete soft green herbs. Perfect for t
