Red Blend from Valpolicella, Veneto
Roccolo Grassi make some of the most enjoyable Valpolicella Superiores I've consumed. They are always balanced, fresh and dry. The development, layering and epic complexity are impressive. The 2017 Valpolicella Superiore by Roccolo Grassi is a sleeping giant. It slowly awakens in the glass with a dark mix of herbal-tinged plums, cracked ashen stone, incense and dried flowers. This is silky verging on velvety, with a core of stimulating acidity that helps to enliven depths of ripe minera

The 2023 Primofiore is more savory than sweet, opening with dusty rose tones, a beguiling whiff of tangerine, wild strawberries and stone dust. It is round and energetic in style, perfumed with violet and lavender tones as ripe blackberry fruits swirl throughout. The finish is classically dry and long, yet remarkably fresh, leaving a subtle tannic crunch and a hint of wild blueberry to linger.Eric Guido, Vinous 93 Points50% Corvina and Corvinone, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet

The Primafiore is a little hidden gem in the Quintarelli range. It's a great intro to just how skilled the Quintarelli team is at making wines blended from native and French varietals. An approach we see in their Ca del Merlo and top of the wazza Alzero. The little brother to the Alzero, red floral notes, dusty spice, orange peel and ripe leafy cassis fruit. Very perfumed and intense now, with hints of lavender and ripe blueberry. The finish is long, with very fine, chalky tannins. And

Red Blend from Valpolicella, Veneto
The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore pulls the taster close to the glass with a darkly alluring blend of dried roses, violets, crushed stone, clove and blood orange. It washes across the palate with silken textures, lifted and finessed in the style of the vintage, as ripe wildberry fruits swirl beneath an air of sweet lavender. The word ethereal comes to mind as the 2018 tapers off with sweet tannins that provide a lovely framework to perfumed inner florals and hints of blackberry that reson
Red Blend from Valpolicella, Veneto
Over the last few releases we've seen a continual evolution with a little more freshness and tension across the range. The Valpolicella Classico Superiore is the first of the traditional Veneto red blends from Quintarelli and a great introduction to them. The fruit is fully ripe and perfectly balanced by the acidity. It’s fresher and more taut than previous vintages. The 2016s had more tannin, while the 2019 carries tannin, elegance and real power. By comparison with the Ca del Merlo, the V
Quintarelli masters blending local, non-local Italian & French varietals. Where most make clunky, awkward wines lacking harmony with this approach, Quintarelli achieves flow, complexity and deftly balances fruit flavours and florals with earthy, woody herb notes. (Read Patrick Suskinds "Perfume" and the importance of this will make sense). Over the last few releases we've seen a continual evolution with a little more freshness and tension across the range. The 2019s simply have more power
The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Cal del Merlo wafts up with an incredibly pretty, savory bouquet of dried Mediterranean herbs, geranium and citrus-tinged wild strawberries. It displays depths of ripe red and blue fruits underscored by crisp mineral tones as rosy inner florals arch across the palate, all over a core of tantalizing acidity. The finish is floral and long, leaving a tart sensation of raspberry as hints of lavender fade slowly. This is a supremely elegant and refined vinta
The Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca’ del Merlot is distinctly savory in the glass, with a thrust of wild herbs that evolves into fresh picked strawberries and wet stone. This is a model of purity and balance, with brilliant acidity that propels its crisp wild berry fruits as violet inner florals collect toward the close. Further elevated by a hint of confectionary spice, it tapers off remarkably fresh and vivid, with a blueberry tinge and dusty tannins that promise a lovely evolution. This

Red Blend from Valpolicella, Veneto
Four years after release, Quintarelli's Ca del Merlo is sitting in a beautiful space. A wine that sits so comfortably in its own skin. Once again a demonstration from Quintarelli of their masterful skill in eliciting the best from an array of local and foreign varieties. Power with transparency and delicacy, complex sweet fruits and florals with earthiness, dry woody herbs, pops of spice. Super fine long tannins, that have relaxed, yet remain finely balanced with refreshing delicate acid. Mad Vi

“The 2016 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta is intense, with a captivating bouquet that blends cedar shavings, savory herbs and balsamic spices with rum-soaked cherries, sweet lavender and dark chocolate. This sweeps across the palate with silken textures, delivering masses of tart red and black fruits along with hints of espresso bean. Crunchy mineral tones and zesty acidity add dramatic lift. The 2016 tapers off long and staining, sporting a pleasantly bitter tinge of cocoa as grippy ta
