The first time we've had Sandro Fay's wine from the Sassella sub-zone of Valtellina and it's a ripper. A step up from the Valgella appropriately reflected in the price difference. Longer and with more mid-palate depth it shows excellent flow and shape. The pure, fine acid and long sophisticated tannins make for an equally refreshing drop. Darker sour cherry fruit laced with slate, spice and lick of that alpine thing doing on. Great transparency. Loads of joy to be had with this pleasure festa!

As with the 2015, 2017 & 2019 I found myself not really wanting to write tasting notes simply wanting to devour the glass!Sassella typically produces the most elegant wines of the three communes with Inferno next and Grumello the boldest.Sassella has done it again! Perfume and intensity on the nose lovely flowers. Refined and more linear with an additional layer of tannins and textural intrigue. Super fine acid. It’ll be lovely to see this with a couple more years as it will relax

The 2018 Valtellina Superiore Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto is poised, elegant and exceptionally polished. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give this deceptively mid-weight Riserva tons of energy. The 2018 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Rocce Rosse is bright, lifted and translucent in the glass. It offers striking intensity and yet remains light on its feet. Crushed red berry fruit, white flowers, mint, chalk and tangerine peel build with time in the glass, filling out the layers effortlessly. The name has changed from Vigna Regina to Nuova Regina the wine is the same ... Delicious! Sassella is typically the most elegant of the Communes made by Ar.Pe.Pe.The new queen. Cherry, liquorice root, alpine and dried flower perfume with some exotic spice. Medium-bodied, delicious juicy red fruit, fine grained crushed rock tannin, lots of rose oil and a little mandarin peel, with a fine stony finish of impeccable length. The Rocce Rosse has a darker feel. Currently, I perceive it as a little richer with an extra squirt of tannin to hold it. Dark spiced, long firm yet fine tannins. Like the Nuova Regina and Sant’Antonio it lingers for some time. Again there is real beauty here. It unfolds in the glass revealing layer after layer. Although it was line ball between the 2015 Inferno and Sassella I always lent toward the Sassella as a personal preference. ArPePe have delivered a cracker. Sassella typically produces the most elegant wines of the three communes with Inferno next and Grumello the boldest.The weight of the Sassella is on par with the Inferno this year.
