The Volnay is a Violot-Guillemard staple – perfumed, violets and cherries, terrific complexity and elegance.

“This is also aromatically cool and airy with a slightly spicier nose of essence of various red berries. The delicious and tension-filled flavors are on the lighter side while retaining excellent definition on the slightly firmer and longer finish where a touch of austerity gradually emerges. 88-90” Allen Meadows, Burghound 88-90 Points“The 2021 Volnay Les Grands Poisots is showing especially well, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, raspberries and rose petals, followed by

Domaine Comte Armand Volnay 2022

Pinot Noir | Volnay, Burgundy

Here the expressive nose features a broader range of spice elements to the ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, black raspberry and violet scents. The notably finer but not denser medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely texture thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the youthfully austere finale. This velvet-textured effort should also be capable of repaying mid-term keeping. (from Les Grands Champs and Les Famines) 2028+ ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound (89-91) Points

“This is also quite fresh and airy but with a dark fruit profile of plum, violet and more obvious earth influence. There is also slightly better volume to the focused and precise medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a beautifully balanced and impressively complex finish that is less rustic than it usually is. Lovely for its level." ♥ Outstanding Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-92 Points NM 91-93

“Rich dense purple, the nose is a little more reticent than the Pommard, with darker fruit, ripe but balanced, and just a touch of liquorice. While quite backward at the moment, this should emerge very well.” Jasper Morris, 90-92 Points

“The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles wafts from the glass with scents of cherries, raspberries, red plums, rose petals and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with sweet, powdery tannins that are largely concealed by its succulent core of fruit, it's fine-boned and mineral” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 93 Points“A cool and ultra-fresh nose freely offers up its combination of essence of cherry, raspberry and discreet spice wisps. A ripe, airy and cool mix consists mainly of red and dark raspberry, anise and an equally pretty mix of floral elements. There is both excellent volume and vibrancy to the sappy, powerful and muscular larger-scaled flavors that brim with minerality on the serious, long and built-to-age finale. Patience absolutely recommended.Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-93 Points ♥ Outstanding

Moderate wood and menthol can be found on the aromas of violet, red currant and plum. There is excellent density to the velvety and sappy textured flavors that manage to maintain very good precision on the overtly stony, powerful and youthfully austere finale. As is typical for this wine, it’s going to need every bit of a decade to reach its apogee. Drink 2031+Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points ♥ Outstanding

“The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards is more enveloping and demonstrative than the mineral Angles, bursting with notes of red berries, plums and cherries mingled with peony and spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, it's suave and polished, concluding with a saline finish.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points“This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to mask the nuances of the red berry fruit aromas. Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Volnay 2019

Pinot Noir | Volnay, Burgundy

Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if

A wonderfully spicy nose offers up its aromas of both red and dark raspberry, violet and soft floral nuances. There is once again a lovely texture along with fine detail to the more refined middle weight flavors that deliver very good persistence on the youthfully austere and slightly grippy finale. 2030+Allen Meadows, Burghound

Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. 2032+Allen Meadows, Burghound
