The Passopisciaro 2023 Contrada G is 100% Nerello Mascalese from 140-year-old alberello vines planted in Contrada Guardiola, one of my absolute favorite sites on the volcano and one that consistently produces some of the Etna reds I love most. Sourced from vines at 800 meters in elevation in pyroclastic volcanic soils, the wine shows beautiful elegance and fruit that works so nicely within this exceptionally made, well-manicured style. Dusty mineral notes frame elegantly placed blackcurrant, understated volcanic nuances, blue flowers, wild mountain flowers and a hint of white pepper. The wine matures for 18 months in large oak casks.

The brooding and intense 2023 Rosso Contrada G smolders up with a mix of smoky crushed stones, savory herbs and nuances of spiced orange. This shows a significantly lifted and graceful profile, soft and almost weightless, with inner violet and lavender tones that complement its ripe blackberry fruit. The 2023 leaves a crunchy sensation on the long, edgy finish as a bump of zesty acidity provides balance. This is the most delicate Guardiola I’ve encountered, but it’s a style that really works.”
