The 1st Commune di Verduno Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria! This is a hero statement for the 2017 vintage!

Description

Well played my friends, well played! The first 100% Verduno Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria and it’s a beauty. Take the Prinsiot, already excellent, add another couple of layers of development, greater depth of tannin and you’re through the first couple of chapters of this book. A lot going on here. Complex, earthy truffle pops, dark fruit, long linear palate with exceptional mid-palate depth. This is a hero statement for the 2017 vintage. The traits that I saw in the 2015 and 2016 are all here. Superb wine. These guys are sitting toward the top of my favourite Barolo producers at the mo!

“The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is an absolutely gorgeous wine. This is the first vintage in which the Barolo ‘classico’ becomes a Barolo del Comune di Verduno, in other words, a wine only from Verduno. Pliant and deep, the 2017 is striking right out of the gate. A wine of tremendous balance, the 2017 is a total pleasure to taste. Today the flavors are naturally quite primary, but there is so much to like. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange and spice punctuate the finish. Vineyard sites are Rivarocca, plus smaller pieces from Pisapola, Campasso, Rocche dell’Olmo and Boscato.”

About Fratelli Alessandria

In the Vineyard

In the Winery

The usual winemaking info is available. The 2 most important elements that shine through for me.

First they use big old wood, no trees to chew through.

Second, the wines look great in the glass. They are beautifully balanced, have wonderful personalities, and, have that freshness with development that is so crucial for any decent drink.

The 2017 Vintage at Fratelli Alessandria

From Galloni

Vittore Alessandria’s 2017 Barolos are among the finest wines of the vintage. Consistency is always a hallmark of top estates, and that is exactly what readers will find here. Alessandria’s 2017s are deep, fleshy and full of character. The 2017s spent 30-35 days on the skins, with extended maceration in which the cap is floating, but not totally submerged. The malolactic fermentation was in steel, after which the wines were racked into cask and then bottled with 34 months in oak. “The challenge was keeping temperatures low in fermentation to help extend the ferments and retain as much freshness as possible,” Alessandria told me. “Excess drought was more of an issue than the heat. Harvest was about 25 days ahead of 2016. Analytically, the 2017s are similar to the 2015s.”

Where in the World is Fratelli Alessandria?

Wild red berry, camphor, truffle and dark spice aromas form the inviting nose. Elegantly structured, the savory palate also has youthful tension, delivering ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and tobacco blend set against taut, fine-grained tannins. Give it a few more years to fully develop. Drink 2024–2031.
