Halbtrocken translates as “half-dry” in German and is used to designate wines that have between 5 and 18 g/l of residual sugar depending on the total acidity. Today, the term is considered outdated and is used with declining frequency. Instead, producer prefer to use the term feinherb in its place.

Like feinherb, this designation is part of an older, more traditional set of terms used to describe the sweetness and quality of German wines, particularly Rieslings.

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Juicy red fruits that heart shaped Ravera profile, the fruit start broader across the palate and tapering away. Supple refined tannins, long juicy acid with a pleasing tang. Again grape first, tight-knit and pure. The most overtly acid of the Crus, it has loads more to come as the acid resolves with time and secondary development sees this relax and build generosity and complexity. A wonderful Ravera

Bodegas Luis Pérez Fino Caberrubia NV Saca III

Palomino | Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Caberrubia is Bodegas Luis Pérez's answer to NV Grand Cru Champagne! 'Caberrubia' is the name of a local bird which has returned to these vineyards since they were converted to organics. All natural alcohol. It's saline, iodine, balsamic, deeply chalky, deeply savoury, rich with balancing bitterness. Drinking it is like skiing down an intermediate slope, deep and winding but not too rushed, there's heaps of time to explore the chalk and every delicate switch and fold of texture and flavour.

This is also slightly reduced and it's enough to render the nose difficult to assess. The medium-bodied flavors are both more powerful and concentrated though at the expense of less refinement and minerality on the driving and impressively persistent finish. This will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my predicted range but the underlying material appears to be present so that this can eventually happen. Patience required. ♥ Outstanding Allen Meadows
