Halbtrocken translates as “half-dry” in German and is used to designate wines that have between 5 and 18 g/l of residual sugar depending on the total acidity. Today, the term is considered outdated and is used with declining frequency. Instead, producer prefer to use the term feinherb in its place.

Like feinherb, this designation is part of an older, more traditional set of terms used to describe the sweetness and quality of German wines, particularly Rieslings.

Feeling Thirsty?

Chardonnay from Meursault, Côte du Beaune

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Les Chevalières’ 2023

The 2023 Meursault Les Chevalières wafts from the glass with notes of buttery citrus fruit, white flowers, green apple and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and saline palate that's bright and mineral. The racy style of this site works well with the inherent generosity of the vintage. William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 90-92 PointsThe 2023 Meursault Les Chevalières (not Premier Cru as I mistakenly wrote last year!) has a very cohesive bouquet with light white flower

Port from Douro, Portugal

Quinta do Noval Colheita Tawny Port 1976

Another beauty in this wonderful Noval lineup, this, like so many of them, opens so rich and viscous that it seems simply astonishing that it is really this mature. It seems burly and youthful, fresh and invigorating. True, given the 2012 bottling date, it has not done much settling in the bottle—and those first tastes are often amazing. However, it was retasted in the USA as well some months later and over several days to boot. That rich, decadent first attack was still stunning a couple of d

Trebbiano from Abruzzo, Italy

Tiberio Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOP 2024

"... this is really a baby Fonte Canale, so you know this offers a ton of value for the money."Another cracking white from Tiberio. I have just 1 bottle of 2021 Fonte Canale (Tiberio's top of the wazza Trebbiano vying for the best white of Italy) for myself. Given the quality of this entry level Trebbiano, my expectation are through the roof!Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded “Musky peach and apricot mix with crushed rocks and hints of lemon zest as the 2024 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo comes to

White Blend from Valpolicella, Veneto

Giuseppe Quintarelli ‘Bianco Secco’ 2024

NOTE FOR THE 2023:The 2023 Bianco Secco is a model of purity with its bouquet of dusty florals, cracked slate, lime zest and green melon. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness offset by a sour citrus tinge as tart green apple enhances its tension. A salty flourish punctuates the experience as hints of young kiwi mix with apricot through the long and wonderfully fresh finish. This is a refined and captivating vintage of Bianco Secco, a wine that continues to punch well above its class.
