Dolcetto from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo
Oddero have balanced the development of their Dolcetto beautifully. An excellent rendition of Dolcetto - complex with crunch and refined tannins. A little darkness, perfume spice and beyond. The texture and work to get through this through puberty is clear. Complete and delicious.I explored the reductive and raw nature of lesser Dolcetto wines with Pietro in our discussion below.
Timorasso from Colli Tortonesi, Piedmont
Released 6 months later than the 2020 and it shows immediately. The extra time offers up a beautifully resolved wine. There’s something about the texture, aroma and flavour profile of good Italian white. That silvery line of bitterness that graces the finish. Out to play, seamless, the texture is refined with an excellent phenolic play married to fine acid. When Pietro visited Wine Deoced HQ we talked of the gentle development large oak casks offer whilst retaining freshness in a wine. This is
A blend of fruit from three MGA sites (Bricco Chiesa, Capalot and Fiasco), the Oddero 2021 Barolo reveals cassis and dried cherry, but it also shows extra spice and smoke at the back. You get mineral nuances over a well-structured and firm Nebbiolo. This wine requires a little extra time before it fully opens. Once it does, it offers a beautiful mouthfeel with zesty freshness, minerality and lots of energy. It undergoes a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and the wine ages in botte gr

One of my favourite Crus.Take the Barolo add 3 more layers for aroma, flavour and tannin. Ramp up the sophistication of the mouthfeel and you're kinda close to where the Villero sits. Awesome side by side with Sordo's Villero. Different in style. Both fantastic wines, you can see the common thread through the two.Compared to the others, the Oddero 2021 Barolo Villero embraces a wider span of aromas that are more horizontal in approach, with dark fruit, licorice and spice. Nebbiolo from Neive, Barbaresco
Oddero are doing such a wonderful job with this vineyard! Youthful and in need of a decant if you crack it young. Everything is there and in the right places. Energetic, vibrant red fruits, with a pleasant grip, hints of tar and an expressive perfume. Loads of fun to be had here. The best Barbaresco's from 2019 make for exhilarating drinking.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODEDThe 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is a very pretty, effusive wine. Nebbiolo from Neive, Barbaresco
After 3 days open this came into its own and really shone. The tannins have softened a little, harmonising with the fruit. The wine has resolved to reveal a balance, beauty and perfume that sat shy on first opening! Some serious quality here. Vibrant and energetic Slatey mineral chalky nature. Excellent mouth-coating tannins that are fine with great line and length. Juicy acid ramps up some juicy fruit. Excellent elevage. The lasting note is fruit, red and fun. That little splash of perfume sp

Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo
Rocche di Castiglione has to be one of my favourite Crus. The wines have incredible harmony, they are just so complete.I haven't had the chance to try this. I have devoured the 2017 Villero from just around the corner. Given Oddero's consistency through their range I'd say you're in for very safe bet here! The 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a beautiful wine that captures the natural intensity of the year while maintaining the style of the site. Given Oddero's consistency through their range I'd say you're in for very safe bet here! The 2019 Barolo opens to a lean appearance with a very vibrant Nebbiolo color that shines with dark ruby highlights. Nebbiolo from La Morra, Barolo
Give it the requisite air time & it reveals all! Given the Oddero style and the commune of La Morra this has all the ingredients need to be an impressive wine, and it is just that. Before I got my head fully around the tannin complex in the Poderi Oddero wines I cracked one of these and thought, shit, that's a bit OTT, just on the tannin side. A third of the bottle coravined out and 1 month later I chucked the rest in a decanter. The transformation blew my mind. All had resolved and harmonised t

Spending a couple of hours with Pietro exploring the history of Barolo, Poderi Oddero and the people behind the scenes was a pleasure. The quality and personality-filled wines of Poderi Oddero make sense … you’ll see!
Pietro’s grandfather Giacomo, the 5th generation, played a major role in establishing the DOC for Barolo and a suite of agricultural produce, think hazelnuts and white truffles!
While the red tape of a DOC can feel restrictive, at the time the impetus was to collectively set base-level standards that would see the profile of the Langhe raised on a global stage.
Few would argue they haven’t achieved their goal!
Pietro mentions Giacomo saying that you rate a Barolo producer on their Dolcetto.
Based on Oddero’s Dolcetto, and the array of wines across vintages that offered conditions from perfect to hot to cold, frosted, hailed and everything in between, it’s clear the Oddero family and the group of people that work with them will do whatever it takes to get the most out of each season.
This is a great opportunity to explore tannin and mouthfeel.
1. Drink a Dolcetto, Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo to dial into the differences between the varieties.
2. Drink a Langhe Nebbiolo, a Barbaresco Gallina and a Barolo next to each to see how the tannins step as you move from the Langhe to both the Barbaresco and Barolo and how they differ between the Barbaresco and Barolo.
3. Drink the Barolo next the Brunate, Villero & Vigna Rionda to see how the Crus layer up and have very different tannin profiles.
4. Drink a warmer year in the 2017 Barolo next to a cooler year in the 2018 Barolo
Like all of the greats Oddero has a strong focus on texture and as soon as funds and brain space have permitted they have invested in the likes of a sorting table and a super gently destemmer allowing whole berries to have their tannins gently infused into the wine.
Continual experimentation has seen small amounts of whole bunch trialled amongst countless other initiatives.
The podcast from Levi Dalton with Isabella Oddero from 2009 and one with Giacomo Oddero that just dropped is well worth a listen.
