Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Guímaro Ribeira Sacra ‘Finca Capeliños’ Mencia 2021

Guímaro’s wines draw you in. At this level, they move well beyond and above the playful, juby, joven styles. Complex, savoury, layered with sophisticated tannins all of Guímaro's top wines show a deft hand in élévage to elicit the personality of the fruit from which they are made. The elegant, floral and subtle 2021 Finca Capeliños comes from a southwest-facing centenary vineyard at 350 to 400 meters in altitude on granite and schist soils planted with some 70% Mencía and the res

Cogno Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2017

"These vineyards represent the classic side of our production. They make elegant, smooth, and fresh wines with a fine aroma." Valter Fissore "The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a beautiful, precise wine. Bright acids and veins of tannin give the 2017 terrific energy that carries all the way through to the finish. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper and spice all open with a bit of coaxing. This is very nicely done."Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino 2021

The Le Chiuse 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is a lovely wine and one of my favorites from a vintage that is not always easy to read. It delivers its message clearly with dark fruit, blue flower, grilled herb and sweet cedar, showing a sense of fullness and aromatic completeness that is not always present in this year. Soft and silky on the palate, the wine offers gentle, powdery tannins supported by good underlying structure, achieving balance without force. Sourced as a special selection from eig

Cariñena from Priorat, Catalunya

Terroir al Límit Dits del Terra 2018

Huber's warmer, bolder version of his 1er Cru equivalent Cariñena or Carignan perfumed, spicey & savoury! The Dits del Terra can be thought of as Arbossar’s south-facing sibling. It is also 100% Cariñena, from three schist-rich sites where the vines are more than 80 years old. Dits del Terra was one of the first vineyards that Huber and his then partner, Eben Sadie, acquired when they started making wine together in the Priorat. The south-facing terroir brings more flesh and power, yet also

Terroir al Límit L’Arbossar 2021

Huber's cooler fresher version of his 1er Cru equivalent Cariñena or Carignan has a ridiculous perfume & teases your senses! Arbossar is a steep, 1.6-hectare site vineyard of 100-plus-year-old Cariñena (Carignan) with schist and granite soils. It’s close to the village of Torroja where the Terroir al Límit cellars are based. Against conventional wisdom, Arbossar was planted on the cooler, north-facing slopes of Torroja. It was this unusual site, purchased in 2005, that informed much of H

Baricci Brunello di Montalcino 2021

Super impressive, layered, bright, brooding, epic intrigue, incredible complexity. It has that 5th dimension, harmony seamless, together, wonderful personality. Exceptional, ripe, nutty, layered tannins. Fresh, vibrant fruit. Restraint subtlety. Great tension that will clearly hold it in good stead as it ages. A grape first delight that gives you an inner glow.Paul Kaan, Wine Decoded July 2026Baricci consistently makes wines that reflect the identity of this special Tuscan territory.

E. Pira (Chiara Boschis) Barolo ‘Via Nuova’ 2018

This one's an argument for blending sites! The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of seven plots from Barolo, Monforte & Serralunga! This one’s an argument for blending sites! The 2018 Barolo Via Nuova is an organic blend of fruit from six MGA sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (in Monforte d’Alba) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga d’Alba).2018 is restrained in feel, but all the elements are so well balanced. Vajra Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2020

The G.D. Vajra 2020 Barolo Ravera reveals wild forest berry, cherry, licorice root and sweet summer fruit. The effect is focused or chiseled thanks to animating acidity and pinpoint fruit flavors. Located in the village of Novello, Ravera benefits from open panoramas and cooler temperatures from the mountains. These factors make this cru one of the most promising in this era of climate change. This is a Barolo for the purists. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate 96 Points AG 94+

Vajra Barolo ‘Bricco delle Viole’ 2020

The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. I would be thrilled to own it.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96 Points ML 95

Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba, Barolo

Ca’ di Press Barolo ‘Perno’ 2021

A density with a serious core of vibrant fruit lined by a  dark edge and truffles. Graphite, tar, tabacco. A lacing of fine perfume.  Serious presence here. More immediate generosity and playfulness than many Monforte’s. Purity with personality. Complete and harmonious. Optimised for the year. Fine acid. Beautifully handled proper Nebbiolo tannins that are refined at this youthful age for a Monforte. Grip of quality. Sensual, long and flowing finish. A special wine with plenty more to come.

Pinot Noir from Savigny-lès-Beaune, Côte du Beaune

Domaine Tollot-Beaut Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru ‘Les Fournières’ 2019

"A brooding and reluctant nose is comprised by notes of fresh dark berries, especially black raspberry, along with touch of forest floor, earth and leather. The rich, concentrated and powerful big-bodied flavors coat the palate before culminating in a youthfully austere, serious and built-to-age finale. This needs to develop better depth but everything appears to be in place for that to occur." Drink: 2031+ Outstanding ♥Burghound
