Beautifully composed, flowing and elegant for a Grumello  a commune that can show a little more overt grunt in the context of Valtellina. While there is a rounder mid palate the delicacy entrances. Incredibly layered and fine. The fruit marries woody herbs, spice tea and beyond with a blood orange feel. Long though not quite the length of the Sant’Antonio. Fine drinking to be had here. Very fine, pure, ultra-mineral expression of Nebbiolo here. Strawberry, raspberry, spice, fennel, min

The name has changed from Vigna Regina to Nuova Regina the wine is the same ... Delicious! Sassella is typically the most elegant of the Communes made by Ar.Pe.Pe. The Nuova Regina is clearly the most sophisticated of the 2016 Riserva crop. The perfume here ramps up a notch, delicacy and intrigue with underlying power all be it in a mid-weight wine. Constantly changing and evolving with each sniff. The flow, shape and mouthfeel are impeccable. Vibrant red fruit with woody herbs tea, blood ora

The Rocce Rosse has a darker feel. Currently, I perceive it as a little richer with an extra squirt of tannin to hold it. Dark spiced, long firm yet fine tannins. Like the Nuova Regina and Sant’Antonio it lingers for some time. Again there is real beauty here. It unfolds in the glass revealing layer after layer. Incredible, complete wine of exceptional balance. It is unfair to separate the two Sassella, they are both stunning. Drinking the pair together on any given night over the next 1

Once again my preferred Grumello from Ar.Pe.Pe. A build in perceived fruit weight length and depth over the Bon Consiglio with immediate generosity make for superb drinking out of the gate. Comparing this to the 2009 consumed a couple of weeks ago I foresee this building in complexity from an already complex starting point and achieving the incredible transparency of the 2009 as it moves into the next stage of development. Although it will be hard to keep your hands off it! The church of

Late harvest quasi sforzato play here. There’s fun to be had here. ArPePe play in between a full-blown sforzato and the rest of their Riserva range makes for a fun balance. Completely dry, it introduces a level of richness and extra layer of tannin. Gary's note captures it well. Harvest is November 10th, because they leave the grapes to dry out and shrivel a little. It’s from the highest part of Sassella, sitting at 600m above sea level.  Cherry, blackberry, plum, dried mint,

A restrained, cooler and slightly more elegant nose is comprised by notes of ripe red currant and a hint of forest floor character. There is even better underlying tension and fine delineation if not quite the same mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that display a subtle bead of minerality on the lingering and dusty but not really austere finale. Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 2017

Pinot Noir | Morey-Saint-Denis, France

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! Lignier is one of the latest to release their wines. The extra year really makes a difference as the wines resolve and come together. The Morey-Saint-Denis has the hallmark red fruit of the village. The depth and length are exceptional, what really makes this wine are the wonderfully refined texture, purity and vitality. It charms and entices you as the aromas with some background florals and spice lift from the

This is what Pinot is like when everything comes together! Here too the nose of both red and dark cherry, earth and humus is on the toasty side. The sleek, refined and vibrant lighter weight flavors exhibit fine detail on the lingering and much better balanced finish. This is a bit light but it is undeniably pretty. Burghound

Domaine Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin 2019

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, France

Cracking example of Gevrey-Chambertin. There’s a theme through Louis Boillot’s wines of harmony, and, delicacy with intensity. "From eight different lieux-dits and averaging over sixty years of age. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has fulfilled all the promise it showed from barrel, bursting with aromas of wild berries, cherries, sweet spices, loamy soil and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, it's deep and concentrated, with a seamless profile and a saline finish. It'

Eric et Joël Durand Cornas ‘Confidence’ 2019

Shiraz/Syrah | Rhône Valley, Cornas

The sophistication and depth of tannin here is impressive. Again a lick of cleverly used, integrated oak hiding behind the fruit that will disappear completely with a little time in bottle. The extra year already sees it resolving. Silky, super fine grape tannins run the length of the palate with lingering fruit of energy. The graphite and mineral thing happening. Even with one extra year the complexity is building. Fresh clean and precise wines with plenty more to come.   The 2019 Corn

"An overtly floral and spice-suffused nose is a bit more deeply pitched with mostly notes of poached plum and black cherry liqueur. There is better vibrancy to the precise and attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that display fine length on the dusty, even chalky, and youthfully austere finish that is notably firmer. Fine quality here." Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-92 Points

One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. Readers will have to be patient, though. Galloni

Domaine SC Guillard Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2017

Pinot Noir | Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits

‘Les Corbeaux’ is bordered one side by the Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin! Takes me to a very happy place! This is excellent, When you shift from the Bourgogne to the Village wines there's an jump in fruit length and depth, the tannins length and become silkier. Hit the Corbeaux and additional layers get added to the fruit and tannins, the refinement of both is obvious the concentration and length of fruit jumps to a level exceeding the bump in price. This is exception Gevrey. Sings now, will be

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most intriguing wines in this range. My impression is that the 2015 still has quite a bit to say, but this is Montefico, where the wines are slow to reveal themselves. White pepper, dried herbs, dried red cherry and mint add a super-appealing upper register. This is such a compelling Barbaresco. Galloni

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano rounds out this series of wines from Produttori del Barbaresco. Ample and resonant on the palate, the Montestefano shows all the natural breadth that is so typical of this site. On the palate, the Montestefano is rich and explosive, with tremendous depth and fabulous overall balance. Dark cherry, plum, espresso, licorice and spice build into the dark, sumptuous finish.
