Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Gobally, there’s been a welcome shift away for cumbersome, overripe, high alcohol, oaky wines, to red wines made with more restraint and freshness.

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Bricco Ambrogio’ 2019

The 2019 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is a pretty tightly-wound wine for a site that has produced much more open-knit Barolos. Giovanni Sordo Barolo Riserva ‘Perno’ 2010

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Lifting the level to Sordo's Riserva Range is always Fun! The wine has resolved beautifully now, the Monforte tannins are still there, the have softened the generosity of fruit has built and secondaries layered in. The layering of flavour, tannin in this is excellent! Everyone went nuts on the Fontalloro because of a couple of extra points, wow, this is stunning! Fèlsina have tamed the beast! The 2019 Pinot Noir Saint Rose a new wine in this lineup. The 2019 is a blend of the best barrels from Domaine de la Côte and La Encantada vineyards. Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Riserva Grumello Buon Consiglio 2016

Beautifully composed, flowing and elegant for a Grumello a commune that can show a little more overt grunt in the context of Valtellina. While there is a rounder mid palate the delicacy entrances. Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Nuova Regina 2016

Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Rocce Rosse 2016

The Rocce Rosse has a darker feel. Currently, I perceive it as a little richer with an extra squirt of tannin to hold it. Dark spiced, long firm yet fine tannins. Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Riserva Grumello Sant’Antonio 2016

Once again my preferred Grumello from Ar.Pe.Pe. A build in perceived fruit weight length and depth over the Bon Consiglio with immediate generosity make for superb drinking out of the gate. Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Ultima Raggi 2016

Nebbiolo | Valtellina, Italy

Late harvest quasi sforzato play here. There’s fun to be had here. ArPePe play in between a full-blown sforzato and the rest of their Riserva range makes for a fun balance.
