The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is dark, powerful and super-expressive. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and menthol infuse this decidedly brooding, potent Riserva. A touch of new oak adds sweetness without being intrusive. Ample and strapping in feel, the 2016 could use a few more years in bottle to be at its best, but it is super-impressive, even today. Moulin de la Gardette ‘Ventabren’ 2018

Rhône Blend | Southern Rhône, France

Jean-Baptiste Meunier's Gigondas wines, from the land where Grenache is King, have an intensity and flavour that are distinctly their own. Moulin de la Gardette sits firmly in Gigondas' 1st Division. An extra layer of flavour & complexity over the 'Tradition'. The 18’s are bolder, darker than the 19's. A little fruit cake here, not at all jammy, five spice, tobacco, flowers, progressing well past bubble gum to a more sophisticated blackberry fruit. Excellent tannins with depth. Persiste

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

A wonderful expression of Serralunga, all of the tea, slate, graphite, exceptional quality tannins, with a presence and sophistication. The firm mouthfeel of seriously good Serralunga tannins. Superb fruit of depth and length. Insane Texture! Great drinking here with much much more to come

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Perno’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

All of those Monforte tannins offering up a delightfully edgy mouthfeel. Understanding of how Sordo's Perno evolves, you can see exactly where this will end up. Grap a 2015, 2010 Riserva, 2008, 2004 or 2001 from our museum collection and you'll see! Yes it’s tight now. Give it 5 years and you will go to a very happy place. The 2010 Perno Riserva and 2008 Gabutti Riserva where the first 2 Sordo Barolos I drank. They lit a fire and I see everything in the 2019 that excited me about the 2010.

Wow! A sensational Rocche. At this early stage in its life it sit with harmony, together. Expressive, a long even palate, stunning tannins that caress. The perfume is intoxicating, faded flowers of Castiglione Falletto. A superb core of fruit of exceptional length. Year in year out this is in the top 3 of Sordo 8 Barolo Crus. It looks like this year will be no different. Savoury, a little salty and earthy. This will be long lived. Beautifullly composed

Greater complexity than Ravera at this early stage in its life. Florals, earthy, truffled layers on red fruits with classic roses and woody herbs at play. Hints of baking spice, it feels a little more relaxed at this stage compared to the Ravera. Excellent tannins, fine, precise, long and even matching the fruit through the full length of the palate. Outstanding purity. A superb expression of Verduno.

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Ravera’ 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

Juicy red fruits that heart shaped Ravera profile, the fruit start broader across the palate and tapering away. Supple refined tannins, long juicy acid with a pleasing tang. Again grape first, tight-knit and pure. The most overtly acid of the Crus, it has loads more to come as the acid resolves with time and secondary development sees this relax and build generosity and complexity. A wonderful Ravera

The reds of Chassagne a little secret that's slowly making its way out of the bag. I had one of Alex's red the 1978 monopole Morgeot 'La Cardeuse' in September 2020. In a word stunning. Ask Alex and he'll tell you the soil profile is very similar to Chambolle in that neck of the woods. Offering up notes of peonies, rose petals, red berries and spices, the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is medium-bodied, satiny and perfumed, with lively acids and a saline finish. The first release of the Sesto Canto since 2009 & it's Amazing! As you shift from the Superiore level to the 2013 Riservas, the maceration period drops from over 100 days to around 70 days. The intensity of fruit goes up a notch and the tannins sit prouder in the wine. The sophistication of the mouthfeel is impressive. As with the Superiore wines the complexity and harmony are there in abundance and lift to new levels. These wines really require time in the glass to reveal their best. Drinking a

Fèlsina ‘Fontalloro’ IGT 2017

Sangiovese | Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy

Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting. Antonio Galloni

Perfumed Refined Goodness! A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an blend of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest Havelock Hills vineyards, first planted in 1892. Always a cabernet sauvignon dominant wine, often with merlot and cabernet franc, Coleraine is refined and classical, demonstrating the immense potential for Bordeaux blends in Hawke’s Bay.
