Barbera from Neive, Barbaresco

Bruno Giacosa Barbera d’Alba Casa Vinicola 2022

One of Italy’s great value red wines, the Barbera d’Alba ‘Casa Vinicola’ is an expression of Barbera fruit sourced from around the Barolo and Barbaresco sub-regions. This is one of the longest standing labels in Giacosa’s stable having first been produced in 1969, just after the first Barolos and Barbarescos of the mid-60’s. These days it is a refreshing red that shows the ripe red berries of great Barberas from Alba, alongside notably sinewy tannins and a good mineral core.

Gamay Noir from Morgon, Beaujolais

Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py ‘Javernieres’ 2018

I thought Bouland, Thivin & Foillard were good! Judging by the not so 'standard' Côte du Py and the 'James' from 2018, this will be stunning. The cuvée Javernières is produced from a 0.5 hectares parcel with clay soils, it will charm you with its elegance, finesse. It makes for a fascinating comparison with the James, a blend of several of the domain greatest terroirs, that develops serious complexity with age. Burgaud's 2018 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is showing beautifully, unfurli

Red Blend from Ribeiras do Sil, Ribeira Sacra

Guímaro Ribeira Sacra ‘San Pedro’ Mencia 2020

Guímaro’s wines draw you in. At this level, they move well beyond and above the playful, juby, joven styles. Complex, savoury, layered with sophisticated tannins all of Guímaro's top wines show a deft hand in élévage to elicit the personality of the fruit from which they are made. There's a build in weight and richness here over the Miño river sibling to this wine. The San Pedro has a beautiful acid balance. Savoury salami, spiced, energy and freshness, super complex. Harmonise

Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Bourgogne Rouge 2022

Sourced from vineyards immediately next to the Gevrey-Champertin AOCUltra-fresh aromas of red pinot fruit, spice and more discreet earth nuances lead to equally delicious and more finely textured middleweight flavors that possess notably better volume on the better balanced and sneaky long finish. This is quite good for what it is and worth checking out.Allen Meadows, Burghound 87 PointsThe 2022 Bourgogne Rouge delivers notes of cherries, plums, smoke and loamy soil, fol

Barbera from Monforte d'Alba, Barolo

Cascina Penna-Currado Barbera d’Alba ‘Currà’ 2023

Tasted from cask, the 2023 Barbera d'Alba Carrà is hugely promising. It's one of my favorite wines in this range so far. Deep and explosive, the 2023 offers a captivating mix of dark fruit, along with a host of complicating floral, savory and mineral overtones. It's a very serious wine in the making. That's not terribly surprising, given how captivating the Barberas were at Vietti during the Currados tenure.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 90-93 PointsNote on the 2022: The love of Barbera s

Nebbiolo from Sassella, Valtellina

Sandro Fay Valtellina Superiore Sassella ‘Il Glicine’ 2021

The first time we've had Sandro Fay's wine from the Sassella sub-zone of Valtellina and it's a ripper. A step up from the Valgella appropriately reflected in the price difference. Longer and with more mid-palate depth it shows excellent flow and shape. The pure, fine acid and long sophisticated tannins make for an equally refreshing drop. Darker sour cherry fruit laced with slate, spice and lick of that alpine thing doing on. Great transparency. Loads of joy to be had with this pleasure festa!

Shiraz/Syrah from Cornas, Northern Rhône

Auguste Clape “Le Vin des Amis” 2019

The least expensive, but still ageworthy, wine is the Le Vin des Amis, a blend of young-vine Cornas and Syrah grown just south of the village.

Red Blend from Valli Ossolane, Alto Piemonte

Cantine Garrone Prünent 2018

Neb from the FAR NORTH ... Stylistically think the more ethereal communes of Valtellina! Brooding and darker than the Ca d’Mate with a build in structure. A little Austere, yet you can see there is much to come with time in bottle. Openning in the glass to reveal woody herbs, fresh sour cherry and complexities beyond.Such a different balance point to Barolo & Barbaresco. 13.5% sees vibrant fruit with layered dusty ripe tannins, whereas Barolo and Barbaresco need 14.5% for the same. Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba, Barolo

Cascina Penna-Currado Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC Superiore ‘San Sebastiano’ 2023

The 2023 Nebbiolo d'Alba San Sebastiano hails from older vines at Bricco Lago and saw the longer aging required by the appellation. From cask, it is a gorgeous and romising wine. Dark varietal fruit, graphite, lavender, sage and spice soar from the glass. Bright acids and veins of tannin shape this vibrant, wonderfully salivating Nebbiolo I can't wait to taste it from bottle.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 90-93 Points

Shiraz/Syrah from Saint-Joseph, Northern Rhône

François Villard Saint-Joseph ‘Mairlant’ 2020

Love the perfume here very complete long layered fine, dark and red fruit with brooding and stalk. Harmonious with subtle pepper pop. Excellent élévage, fine acid. Build in structure and mid-palate grip, giving energy. Playful fun.Excellent comparision with Hauts Châssis’ Saint-Joseph made with no whole bunches.Saturated violet color. Vibrant, spice-tinged dark berry, cherry, potpourri and licorice aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Fresh blackberry and bitter

Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany

Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Speller is on the money, this is still closed (April 2023). Builds with time in the glass, the fruit leans toward the fine Burgundian style. The tannins are just a little edgy, as with the Brunello, as the new Botti season future vintages should see further refinement to the texture.  This clearly sits in between the Rosso & Brunello level. I like the cranberry descriptor and would add a musk and rose top note. A few years in bottle should see the tannins resolve fully and mid-palate weight
