There’s 1,000’s of red grape varieties grown around the world making a diverse range of wines.

Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Gobally, there’s been a welcome shift away for cumbersome, overripe, high alcohol, oaky wines, to red wines made with more restraint and freshness.

Brooding with Sour Cherry and Dark Fruit. Kinda the child to Block 1 and Block 2 It's got some edgy tannin and extraction on one hand from the Pommard clone of Pinot. On the other it's got concentration and oppulence from the MV6 clone. Really want to see this wine in another 12-24 months.

The 2022 Barbaresco is superb. Deep and layered, the 2022 offers an explosion of red-toned Nebbiolo fruit intermingled with floral and spice overtones. One of Italy’s great value red wines, the Barbera d’Alba ‘Casa Vinicola’ is an expression of Barbera fruit sourced from around the Barolo and Barbaresco sub-regions. This is one of the longest standing labels in Giacosa’s stable having first been produced in 1969, just after the first Barolos and Barbarescos of the mid-60’s. These days it is a refreshing red that shows the ripe red berries of great Barberas from Alba, alongside notably sinewy tannins and a good mineral core.

I thought Bouland, Thivin & Foillard were good! Judging by the not so 'standard' Côte du Py and the 'James' from 2018, this will be stunning.The cuvée Javernières is produced from a 0.5 hectares parcel with clay soils, it will charm you with its elegance, finesse. It makes for a fascinating comparison with the James, a blend of several of the domain greatest terroirs, that develops serious complexity with age. Tasted from cask, the 2023 Barbera d'Alba Carrà is hugely promising. It's one of my favorite wines in this range so far. Deep and explosive, the 2023 offers a captivating mix of dark fruit, along with a host of complicating floral, savory and mineral overtones. It's a very serious wine in the making. The first time we've had Sandro Fay's wine from the Sassella sub-zone of Valtellina and it's a ripper. A step up from the Valgella appropriately reflected in the price difference. Longer and with more mid-palate depth it shows excellent flow and shape. The pure, fine acid and long sophisticated tannins make for an equally refreshing drop. Darker sour cherry fruit laced with slate, spice and lick of that alpine thing doing on. Great transparency. Loads of joy to be had with this pleasure festa!

Neb from the FAR NORTH ... Stylistically think the more ethereal communes of Valtellina! Brooding and darker than the Ca d’Mate with a build in structure. A little Austere, yet you can see there is much to come with time in bottle. Openning in the glass to reveal woody herbs, fresh sour cherry and complexities beyond.Such a different balance point to Barolo & Barbaresco. 13.5% sees vibrant fruit with layered dusty ripe tannins, whereas Barolo and Barbaresco need 14.5% for the same.
