Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva 'Rocche dell'Annunziata' 2019
All about finesse!
The difference a couple of years makes for wines of this calibre is insane! Rocche dell’Annunziata is the Barolo Riserva of the Scavino family. A historical, prestigious “grand cru” from La Morra village purchased in 1990.Rocche dell’Annunziata is all about finesse, details, weightless elegance. It’s a symphony of ethereal aromas with harmonic motions. Rose petals, violet, lilac, tar, sweet red cherries, mint, minerals are some of the hallmarks of this beautiful cru. In the texture

This wine is full of surprises. From a hot vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2017 Barolo Monprivato is unexpectedly floral, initially, more than it is fruity. Indeed. it shows hardly any sign of the challenges associated with a very dry summer season. Nebbiolo maintains its balance and freshness with an interlude of wild rose and lilac that moves progressively toward cassis, wild cherry and raspberry. The fruit is framed by savory notes of tobacco, rust and autumnal leaf. An elegant mineral note

A completely different aromatic profile is proffered by the nose of intensely sauvage, smoky dark currant and plum. The delicious and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors possess good power on the serious and lingering finish that is borderline rustic. Excellent development potential here. Readers will face an enjoyable challenge determining whether they prefer the brilliant 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers or its 2019 predecessor, though sadly, in 2020 there are only four barrels—around 1,200 bottles—for a thirsty world. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, orange zest and exotic spices, the wine is full-bodied, supple and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a deep, concentrated mid-palate and a long, perfumed finish. Here too the nose is quite fresh with its combination of apple, white flowers and just sliced citrus, especially lemon. There is both excellent punch and a lovely texture though only average density to the lingering and balanced finish where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. While this could be enjoyed young, it has apparent development potential so at least a few years of keeping are recommended. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points Note: fro

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

There is something here that takes Sangiovese to a special place, the perfume, the lovely linear shape of fruit, that deceptive depth and length that builds! A captivating mix of ripe plums, strawberries, cloves, violet pastille, balsam herbs and white smoke emanates from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. This is undeniably elegant in feel, showing a weight unexpected from a young Poggio di Sotto, yet working in perfect harmony, with tart cherries and wild berries drenching the palate in primary

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2018

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

There is something here that takes Sangiovese to a special place, the perfume, the lovely linear shape of fruit, that deceptive depth and length that builds! Poggio di Sotto hits it out the ballpark once again with an extremely elegant interpretation that shows the incredible depth and nuance Sangiovese can achieve, even in an uneven vintage such as this. The certified organic 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark ruby hue and mid-weight concentration. Indeed, the wine is lighter and bright

Once again proving PdB's Barbaresco is a great benchmark! After first tasting the 2021 in Nov 2024, I've shifted into drinking mode! Every bottle has been delicious. Without question it is the best vintage since 2016.It's looking sharp straight out of the gate & will clearly offer much more with time. Fresh & energetic, light on it's feet yet of great depth & length. Elegant, & fine with excellent front mid-palate shape. The tannins are of serious quality with a playful gr

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Bric dël Fiasc’ MAGNUM 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Castiglione Falletto

The 2021 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Red toned-fruit, chalk, white pepper, dried herbs and exotic citrus notes soar out of the glass. Beams of tannin lend the energy and drive that are such classic signatures of this Castiglione Falletto site. A distinctly cooler nose is comprised by notes of Granny Smith, spice, white flower and plenty of wet stone character. The rich and impressively scaled and concentrated big-bodied flavors exude an almost aggressive minerality on the clean, dry and markedly powerful finish. This beautifully long effort could use better depth but it has so much underlying material that more should almost certainly develop over time. Excellent. Bruno Giacosa Barolo 2020

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

All of Giacosa’s Barolo wines are single vineyard offerings, and the same is true for the Classico where all of the fruit in the years it is produced comes from Falletto in Serralunga d’Alba. The most recent vintage of Barolo ‘Classico’ is 2020. In the years where a Barolo ‘Classico’ a Barolo ‘Falletto’ and a Barolo ‘Falletto Vigna Le Rocche’ are all produced concurrently (such as 2016), the fruit for the Barolo ‘Classico’ will usually come from the lower and less expose

The Giuseppe Mascarello 2018 Barolo Monprivato reveals an open and accessible personality. This wine is an immediate charmer. I tasted these wines with the Mascarello family seated across the table from me, and during our chat, they explained that this was a gratifying vintage in terms of farming and winemaking. The growing season was not too hot, and high alcohol levels were not an issue, they say. In the case of this wine, we are greeted to mild tannins and a pretty bouquet with delicate flora
