Once again my preferred Grumello from Ar.Pe.Pe. A build in perceived fruit weight length and depth over the Bon Consiglio with immediate generosity make for superb drinking out of the gate. The 2021 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is classy and polished to the core. This wine has come such a long way since its debut. Enrico Scavino really believed in this site when he purchased it a little more than 20 years ago. The 2021 is a fine testament to his vision. Lavender, sage, menthol and licorice lead into a core of dark-toned fruit in a Barolo that is deep yet also light on its feet. This is impeccably done, not to mention very tasty. 2020 Barolos have been showing very tightly coiled in their youth across the vintage. There have been notable exceptions. The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Gabutti is a delicate, perfumed Barbera with a Nebbiolo-like feeling of mid-weight structure. Succulent dark cherry fruit, tobacco, spice, leather, menthol and blood orange are pushed forward. A kick of bright acids on the finish keeps things vibrant. Again a fascinating difference. When you head to Aloxe-Corton, there is some barely noticeable wood here. It’s doing a superb job adding focus and definition to the wine. This is such a deceptive wine. Wicked depth and length have been tamed to offer a balanced complete wine. Combining the appellation and the generous year gives this ripe yet still fresh flavours.
