The Fizz Master at Work!
Egly easily sits in my list of top 5 Champagne Houses The top end of the Champgne spectrum is often perceived (due to a lot of marketing) to be the Super Cuvées like Dom Perignon and Krug. Don’t get me wrong these are great wines. The thing is when you get the chance and taste the top wines from Grower Champagne houses like Egly-Ouriet you find yourself taking things to an all new level. Their vineyards are immaculate, the fruit comes in with so much intensity you could happily drink the fini

R.Pouillon ‘Les Blanchiens’ Brut Nature 2014

Blend | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, France

Notes on the 2012: This is superb. So fine and delicious. Such harmony is not common, the Pinot and Chardonnay are playing together beautifully. It has just the right level of oxidative vinosity, so well supported by a core of fruit that has great length and depth. I keep coming back the the harmony, layers of complexity and balance. Will the Pinot seems to be the dominant, as would be expected in the front and mid-palate, the line and length from the Chardonnay and the mineral nature to this

One of the greatest rosé wines of Champagne and a wine of haunting finesse. The blend is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay with 60% coming from the great 2014 vintage and 40% vins de réserve (split almost equally between 2013 and 2012). Then there is the 5% of Egly’s Coteaux Champenois Rouge that gives the wine its colour and a great deal of character as well. Dosage is a negligible 3g/l. The fruit is from 100% Grand Cru vines, grown by one of the most meticulous vignerons of the region

84 Months on Lees

Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru V.P. Base 2015 NV

Blend | Verzenay, Ambonnay

V.P. = Viellissement Prolongé = Prolonged ageing on lees! The V.P. stands for Vieillissement Prolongé (prolonged ageing), as the wine spends so long on lees, in this case 84 months. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, the fruit comes from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay--all great Grand Cru terroirs. Vinification and élevage is in oak casks, with the dosage being a tiny 2g/l, so seriously Extra Brut. The power of the fruit, plus the extended lees ageing grants such harmony, so much

“Today there are a handful of wines from elite, artisanal grower-estates in Champagne that have attracted a nearly cult-like following. One of the most sought-after of these is the meunier of Jérôme Prévost.” Liem This is 2020 base with 20% reserve wine from 2019—so two brilliant seasons. Les Béguines is close to 100% Meunier, although there is now a small parcel of 10-year-old Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc planted next to the Meunier (these vines represent roughly six pe

R.Pouillon Rosé Brut MAGNUM NV

Pinot Noir | Vallée de la Marne, Champagne

Such a beautiful Rosé. If finding a good wine is hard, finding tasty Rosé Champagne is a true mission. There are so many tricked up hard angular wines. Fabrice has got it all going on here. Rosé made by allowing fruit skin contact rather than dosing a white wine with some Red really does appear to offer a much more refined result. This one has lovely fresh, yet developed, red fruits, a little savoury edge and so much more going on. The halmark Pouillon harmony and energy. Just that very sligh

Pinot Noir | Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, France

“This is our foundation-wine as so many things started with this parcel. First of all, because it’s one of Champagne’s oldest massal selections. Afterwards and most especially because it gave me the idea for my Méthode Fabrice Pouillon used to make all my wines.”

Combining richness with precision, an incredible texture & complexity make it almost impossible to describe this wine! The hallmarks of greatness. This wine truly takes me to a happy place. Tasted next to Krug NV, a very good bottle at that, the Egly was inspirational. The élévage of this wine is simply perfect. Taking the time to mature base wines before blending and bottling makes an incredible difference to fruit of this quality, adding 70 months on lees has brought this wine together b
