Terroir al Límit L’Arbossar 2019

Cariñena | Priorat, Spain

Huber's cooler fresher version of his 1er Cru equivalent Cariñena or Carignan has a ridiculous perfume & teases your senses! Arbossar is a steep, 1.6-hectare site vineyard of 100-plus-year-old Cariñena (Carignan) with schist and granite soils. It’s close to the village of Torroja where the Terroir al Límit cellars are based. Against conventional wisdom, Arbossar was planted on the cooler, north-facing slopes of Torroja. It was this unusual site, purchased in 2005, that informed much of H

Terroir al Límit Terra Pedra de Guix 2018

White Blend | Priorat, Spain

Huber's 1er Cru level white steps up to the plate. One of the most fascinating whites I've seen in ages! Vi de Coster, the equivalent of 1er Cru wine. As we have said before, this is one of the most mineral, sculpted whites we know—it tastes as if the wine was tapped directly from pure rock—which of course it was. Forget about how rare white Priorat is, Pedra de Guix gives the great whites of the world a run for their money. This is a blend of three varieties from three villages: Poboleda

Spicey Savoury Sensual!

Terroir al Límit Dits del Terra 2018

Cariñena | Priorat, Spain

Huber's warmer, bolder version of his 1er Cru equivalent Cariñena or Carignan perfumed, spicey & savoury! The Dits del Terra can be thought of as Arbossar’s south-facing sibling. It is also 100% Cariñena, from three schist-rich sites where the vines are more than 80 years old. Dits del Terra was one of the first vineyards that Huber and his then partner, Eben Sadie, acquired when they started making wine together in the Priorat. The south-facing terroir brings more flesh and power, yet also

The 2021 El Bardallo is produced with the grapes from the same plot as in previous years in the zone of San Vicente that names the wine; they believe this plot produces the wines in their cellar that have more finesse. Like the rest of the reds, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and part whole clusters and matured in 500- and 600-liter barrels in their underground cellar. This is serious and elegant, with ripe berry fruit and spice from the élevage, a full palate with pungent flavors, power a

Toro Albalá Don PX Selección 200ml 1980

Pedro Ximénez | Spain, Montilla-Moriles

17% ABV. “The 1980 Don PX Selección is said to come from a warm and dry year that favored the raisining of the Pedro Ximénez grapes. This has lots of candied fruit and spice and combines the 17% alcohol with a whopping 340 grams of residual sugar. This aged in American oak butts until its bottling in September 2018. It surprised me with a complex and somewhat savory nose, reminiscent of bitter chocolate, licorice and roasted coffee, carob beans and black pepper. It's super concentrated, dens

Guímaro’s wines draw you in. At this level, they move well beyond and above the playful, juby, joven styles. Complex, savoury, layered with sophisticated tannins all of Guímaro's top wines show a deft hand in élévage to elicit the personality of the fruit from which they are made. I had the chance to compare the 2020 Finca Pombeiras with the 2019, just like I did with the other three single-vineyard bottlings. This is from a plot planted with the classical field blend found in the

Artuke ‘La Condenada’ Rioja 2021

Red Blend | Spain, Alavesa

Trying ‘La Conenada’s’ brother 'El Escolladero'  along with a few other wines from the Artuke range was enough to convince me to grab a couple of boxes. Well it's arrived, and I can see why it is one of the Artuke's two crown jewels! The palate has exceptional shape and flow, yes it is precise! The acid ~ tannin ~ fruit ~ alcohol complex sits in perfect harmony. As with the El Escolladero there is just a little edge of grip to the mouthfeel, again in a cleansing positive way. Opening

Toro Albalá Don PX Selección 200ml 1965

Pedro Ximénez | Spain, Montilla-Moriles

17% ABV. “Small lots of old vintages are released following no apparent logic, like this 1965 Don PX Selección, which is produced with white Pedro Ximénez grapes but it's black rather than white, bottled in June 2014 with 290 grams of residual sugar. It has a nose of pure curry, aromas of an Indian restaurant, very balanced, not as sweet as others, in fact it's more bittersweet than sweet, combining the spices with bitter chocolate and with very good acidity that makes it relatively easy to

Toro Albalá Don PX Convento Selección 200ml 1955

Pedro Ximénez | Spain, Montilla-Moriles

16.5% ABV. “One more single-harvest, old sweet wine, the 1955 Don PX Convento Selección was bottled in September 2014 and it had been aged slowly in very old American oak barrels and getting thick and concentrated through evaporation. Its 320 grams of sugar are (partially) compensated by 6.5 grams of acidity. It has a nose and palate of chocolate-covered candied orange, spices, molasses. I'd say the dominant aromas in the nose are dark chocolate. It's very dense, developing notes of very conc

The 2015 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha from their estate vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels of different origins and sizes for 27 to 29 months. The wine shows superb, an undated style of Gran Reserva, using grapes from the three different valleys they have in Remelluri to create their grand vin. It has a classical style, but the oak and the evolution is slower, and the texture shows more of the limestone from the soils. Th

The single-vineyard red 2021 Camino de Ribas comes from a plot, La Cóncova, under the Toloño peak close to Rivas de Tereso, a hamlet from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, possibly the coolest zone, with a north-facing exposure, a place with shallow soils with sand, limestone and sandstone and full of aromatic herbs. It's a blend of 50% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha and the rest Viura, Jaen, Garnacha Blanca, Palomino and other white varieties. It fermented with a long and soft vinification with some wh

The first iteration of this wine I drank was the 2018, a seriously impressive wine. It wasn't your grandmother's Sherry and nor is the 2021. Made in the style of bygone regional traditions, the De La Riva Vino de Pasto is a non-fortified aromatic table wine made with Palomino from the El Notario plot in pago Macharnudo. It's personality is influenced by a period of time in lightly ullaged barrel under flor Luis Guitiérrez comments that from 2019 Willy and Ramiro have tried to reduce the e

Àlvaro Palacios ‘Finca Dolfi’ 2021

Garnacha | Spain, Catalunya

I had the pleasure of devouring the 2016 about 18 months ago over an aged scotch fillet with a friend. A wine of presence and importance. Along with the other Priorats I've had from Àlvaro it's clear he's got it right in both the vineyard and the winery. After all, to make a wine like the legendary L'Ermita you need mad skills! Even just after landing in the country when wines are a little out of sorts from shipping across the world, the perfume builds in the glass with all the trademark

Incredibly bright and energetic red fruits. Excellent depth and length. Wonderful shape, fine long with a gentle dusting of plush, supple tannins with a slatey twist. So layered and harmonious. Compost and straw in a nice way complimenting fruit of incredible richness and length. Sophistication in a glass.
