Côte-de-Nuits
Like Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny is completely planted to Pinot Noir. However, the styles associated with the respective appellations present an intriguing contrast. Where Gevrey-Chambertin has a reputation for powerful, structured Pinot Noirs, Chambolle-Musigny typically offers more delicate expressions. This is not to suggest that Chambolle-Musigny is a wilting violet; rather its intensity manifests in more subtly, with soft tannins and pretty aromatics.
Chambolle-Musigny is home to two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, which links its vineyards to those of Morey-Saint-Denis, and the great Musigny vineyard, which overlooks the Clos de Vougeot. The village also boasts among its fine wines the prestigious Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses.
The appellation’s sloping vineyards face east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

Here too the aromas of plum, violet and blueberry are super-fresh and expressive. The sleek, intense and beguilingly delicious middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality onto the firm and relatively serious finish. This is perhaps less elegant than it usually is as it's more structured but it may well compensate by developing even better depth over time. ♥ OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound 89-92 Points Barthod's beautiful 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village reveals an inviting b

Initially there is a touch of reduction though aggressive swirling slowly reveals overtly floral-suffused nose that is comprised mostly by attractively spicy red and dark berries aromas. There is excellent volume to the rich but appealingly delineated medium-bodied flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finish. Aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet spices, rose petals and loamy soil introduce the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine that's lively and mineral. I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. It is next to the Premier Cru "les Borniques" to the east and to the south, about fifty meters from the Grand Cru "le Musigny". Situated on reddish brown clays rich in iron oxides on about 30 cm then we find very quickly the limestones of Chambolle Musigny. Its north-east exposure and the influence of the combe mixed with its limestone soil gives a great freshness to this chambolle. There's a great purity & vibrancy to Magnien's wines. His Sentiers is classic Chambolle! A slightly more elegant and more floral-suffused nose displays notes of violet, lavender and plum liqueur. There is fine mid-palate density to the suave and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in a bitter pit fruit and nicely balanced finale. This is also quite good with an understated delivery. Drink: 2030+Allen Meadows, Burghound 90

This is also aromatically perfumed with better layering to the spicier aromas of mostly red cherry and rose petal. There is markedly more refinement to the seductively, even generously, textured medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle bead of minerality on the impressively long, balanced and more complex finale. This is excellent and is a wine that could be approached young but reward a decade plus of cellaring. (from a .52 ha parcel) 2032+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Bur

A slightly more elegant nose features notes of poached plum, black raspberry, violet and anise hints. There is a notably finer mouthfeel to the attractively textured medium weight flavors that conclude in a firmer and better-balanced finale where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. 2028+ (from a .42 ha parcel)Allen Meadows, Burghound

A more deeply pitched and somewhat less elegant nose combines notes of spiced plum, dark raspberry and touches of earth, tea and sandalwood. The succulent and beguilingly textured medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannins that flirt with rusticity on the lingering finish that also reflects a note of bitter cherry pit.Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-92 Points For the first time—at the instigation of her son, Clément—Barthod elected to vinify a

A perfumed and strikingly pretty nose is at once wonderfully floral and spicy with its fresh essence of red pinot fruit. The fleshy and round yet decidedly powerful, intense and tautly muscular flavors exude a subtle minerality on the compact, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. 2032"Allen Meadows, Burghound ♥ Outstanding
