Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny lies on the southern border of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its AOC status dates from September 1936, making it one of the first French vineyards to be designated.

Like Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny is completely planted to Pinot Noir. However, the styles associated with the respective appellations present an intriguing contrast. Where Gevrey-Chambertin has a reputation for powerful, structured Pinot Noirs, Chambolle-Musigny typically offers more delicate expressions. This is not to suggest that Chambolle-Musigny is a wilting violet; rather its intensity manifests in more subtly, with soft tannins and pretty aromatics.

Chambolle-Musigny is home to two superb Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, which links its vineyards to those of Morey-Saint-Denis, and the great Musigny vineyard, which overlooks the Clos de Vougeot. The village also boasts among its fine wines the prestigious Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses.

The appellation’s sloping vineyards face east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

I had Faiveley's 2015 Latricières Chambertin recently, delicious, perfumed elegant and refined. Along with the 2015, I devoured a brace of 2016's from across the appellations. They are really stepping up their game, the investments in the vineyard and winery are a testament to this.

It is next to the Premier Cru "les Borniques" to the east and to the south, about fifty meters from the Grand Cru "le Musigny". Situated on reddish brown clays rich in iron oxides on about 30 cm then we find very quickly the limestones of Chambolle Musigny. Its north-east exposure and the influence of the combe mixed with its limestone soil gives a great freshness to this chambolle. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Charmes 1er Cru is destemmed and matured in 50% new oak. It has a light, what you might call a “transparent” bouquet with airy red fruit. The palate is well-balanced with grainy tannins. It’s quite a gentle Chambolle with a smooth texture, gaining weight towards the finish and exerting just the right amount of grip. It’s understated in style, but I appreciate how it gains momentum with time. Worth looking out for. Drink: 2026-2040Neal Martin, Vinous 91-93

Beautiful Perfume & Earthy Mystique
There's a great purity & vibrancy to Magnien's wines. His Sentiers is classic Chambolle! A slightly more elegant and more floral-suffused nose displays notes of violet, lavender and plum liqueur. There is fine mid-palate density to the suave and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in a bitter pit fruit and nicely balanced finale. This is also aromatically perfumed with better layering to the spicier aromas of mostly red cherry and rose petal. There is markedly more refinement to the seductively, even generously, textured medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle bead of minerality on the impressively long, balanced and more complex finale. A slightly more elegant nose features notes of poached plum, black raspberry, violet and anise hints. A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of poached plum and exotic tea with those of violet, lilac and a suggestion of wood. The richer and more voluminous flavors possess more evident power if not the same refinement on the more structured finale. This is also nicely balanced but in contrast to the Groseilles, it’s not likely to drink especially well before 8 to 10 years have passed. Check out Burghound's review! Ponsot works a superb 0.6-hectare, old-vine parcel in this renowned vineyard with an average age of nearly 50 years. The site is planted at 12,000 vines per hectare. Ponsot’s vines are at the very top of the vineyard, in line with the top of Les Amoureuses and the bottom of LeMusigny. The outstanding quality of the wine reflects this remarkable terroir and also a remarkable, frost-affected year where the yields were tiny (12hl/ha!). The result is a blockbuster
The 2020 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly in bottle, mingling aromas of dark berries, cherries and cassis with notions of licorice and exotic spices in an incipiently complex bouquet. A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet.
