Etna Whites are a Thing of Beauty! The tiny white plantings for ‘Il Bianco’ 2020 are similarly a ‘field blend’ of carricante with greganico dorato, which ampelographers have determined is one and the same as garganega (the principal variety for Soave in the Veneto, also grown on basaltic lava). 2020 was a pretty straightforward season with beautifully stable weather in October – the whites have great texture, drinkability and exotic fruit character. Vajra Barolo ‘Coste di Rose’ 2015

Nebbiolo | Barolo (sub-region), Italy

Coste di Rose is possibly the most approachable cru of Barolo at this stage, with roses and a floral-dominated nose, combined with marasca cherry and hints of licorice and mint. From a huge 3.5 ha holding that is composed by <75% Vaillons proper with the remainder from Roncières, Mélinots and Châtains. Here too there is a vague suggestion of the exotic on the slightly riper aromas of pear compote, ocean spray, iodine and wet stone. The rich, vibrant and palate coating flavors are also supported by bright acidity that carries over to the wonderfully long, youthfully austere and firm finale. This beauty should age effortlessly 91-93 points,  Drink: 2029+

Giovanni Sordo Barolo Riserva ‘Gabutti’ 2004

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2004 Riserva we see the parallels with the 2016, 2015 & 2008. The long structure is there, the complexity has built further, the wine is now fully comfortable wearing it's own skin, having resolved and built generosity. Of the 2015 it was clear that there was no chance to mistake the Gabutti, with its abundance of darker things; stock, porcini, graphite, smoke and black cherry.
