This wine used to come to us simply as Morgon Vieilles Vignes without the name of the vineyard or lieu-dit (it is now labelled Morgon Les Délys Vignes plantées en 1926). Here too there is enough wood influence suffusing the aromas of mineral reduction, pretty floral wisps, spice and iodine to merit mentioning. I very much like the sophisticated texture of the acceptably concentrated middleweight flavors that deliver excellent depth and length on the firm, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. Mouvèdre is more often seen as a blending component offering a superb perfume of violets and flowers, structured tannins yet not necessarily the overt fruit making it a perfect fit in a Grenache Shiraz Mouvèdre. Although I didn't get to try this wine the 2021 Swinney Mouvèdre demonstrated why a stand-alone version from this Frankland River version works. The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel is alive with citrus foliage, zest and the sweetest fruit aromas. Its tanginess tingles on the nose and continues right on the palate. Vivid freshness and poise define pale white peach flesh on the palate, tempered by a gorgeous, tangy orange peel note that attains a subtle edge of candy.
