White Wine
Beyond style, the variety has incredible ability to be consumed young or very old, producing some of the most long-lived white wines of any variety. The sweet German Rieslings also rate as some of the worlds most expensive.
In Europe we see plantings in Alsace, France, across many regions in Germany from the Mosel to the Rheinhessen and the Pfalz. Along with Grüner Veltinger, Riesling is widely planted in Austria.
In South Australia, the Clare Valley’s, Polish Hill and Watervale produce stunning Riesling. You’ll find great Riesling coming from the Eden Valley SA, Central Victoria, Canberra, Tasmania, and, from the Great Southern in WA.
There are some cracking Rieslings coming out of New Zealand too!
Fresher dry styles tend to have citrus aromas and flavours with floral blossoms. Riper styles introducing stone fruit.
From region to region winemaking changes from simple pressing of fruit and fermentation to dry in stainless steel to use of skin contact and maturation in oak. Layering in different textures and flavours.
Shifting gear to Germany and Alsace the game of balancing sugar, alcohol and acid comes into play. From dry 12.5-13% wines we shift to lower alcohol dry wines and then the freshest of the sweet wines, the Kabinett styles. Coming in with as little as 7.5% sugar the trick is achieving balance with higher acidity. From Kabinett we mover through an array of styles increasing in sweetness and alcohol, heading all the way to the very sweet botrytis style Trockenbeerenauslese & Icewein made from frozen grapes.
You can read more about the different styles of Riesling made in Germany in the Wine Bites Mag articles exploring Riesling.
Off-dry Riesling lends itself beautifully to pairing with many Asian foods. Aged, sweeter, botrytis styles are perfect with cheese and fresher fruit desserts. Fresh, citrus styles are perfect with seafood and lighter poultry.

Riesling from Rheinhessen, Germany
White peach, apple and lime are accented by their pits and pits as well as by raw almond on an enticing nose highly reminiscent of that exhibited by the corresponding 2016. Scents of Ceylon tea and spring beauty (Claytonia) add inner-mouth allure. The feel is flatteringly silken, notwithstanding the persistence of stimulating piquancy. Infectious juiciness, along with an invigoratingly tactile, active sense of crystalline stony impingement, dramatically sets this wine’s vibrant, bell-clear fin

AP 19.20 The 2019er Hofberg Auslese **, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a selection of botrytized grapes (60%) harvested at 125° Oechsle from the main hill of the vineyard, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a beautifully ripe and alluring nose of honeyed peach, apricot, pineapple, cherry, mango, yoghurt cream, and tar, all wrapped into quite some spices, herbs, and a hint of volatile acidity. The wine proves sweet, honeyed, and deeply r

The Marienburg 2023 Auslese Fahrlay, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, is a fully-sweet wine with a beautifully refined and elegant nose of smoke, bergamot, jasmine, acacia, whipped almond cream, tangerine, and violet. The wine proves gorgeously smooth and elegant on the airy and pure palate. The finish is still slightly compact and dominated by residual sugar at this early stage, yet the complexity and purity are quite breathtaking. This splendid, creamy Auslese needs at le

Broad, rich front palate. Juvenille, requiring a lot of coaxing to get it to come out to play. White stone fruit here. Increase in phenolic grip works well here. A little roller coaster of joy. With a silver line at the back palate. Playful, needs 5 years at least."The 2020er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese still proves flinty, quite smoky, and reductive at first before it almost reluctantly reveals its super nose made of stone fruits, vineyard peach, Conference pear, anise, and h
From a higher and cooler site with loess covering the red sandstone soils, the 2022 Wachenheimer Altenburg P.C. opens with a pure, fresh and refined yet also intense and elegant sandstone bouquet with saline notes of crushed stones and phenolic notes from the grapes that are well exposed to the sun. The 2023 Altenburg Wachenheim P.C. is precise and savory on the elegant and classical, slightly flinty and coolish, very stimulating nose. Full-bodied, intense and fleshy on the palate, this is a mouth-filling Riesling with less energy than textural qualities that are framed by serious tannins and ripe lemon bitters on the finish. This is a Riesling for richer dishes that could also be paired with a red wine. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025. Drink 2025-2

Always a favourite! In England they offer tea in the afternoon in the Mosel they offer Kabinett! The 2022er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett initially proves slightly reductive and finely smoky, before it reveals notes of orchard fruits, spices, candied grapefruit, bergamot, and yellow peach. The wine is delicately juicy and fruity on the palate, as yellow and finely ripe yellow fruits currently dominate the aromatics. The finish is nicely focused, light-weighted, and airy, with a subtle t

The Graacher is incredibly powerful with broad shoulders The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese contains almost no botrytized fruit. Only the slightest note of zesty lemon breaks through on the shy nose. More air reveals a hint of mint sorbet. The palate, however, adds an intriguing sweetness that is so akin to the wonderfully zesty notions of green tangerine peel. The next wave of flavor pushes into greengage and juicy white peach notes, always tempered by vivid citrus. The 2024 has gor
