White Wine

Riesling

A stunning variety made in a bewildering array of styles from crisp, dry to off-dry and incredibly sweet.

Beyond style, the variety has incredible ability to be consumed young or very old, producing some of the most long-lived white wines of any variety. The sweet German Rieslings also rate as some of the worlds most expensive.

Where is it grown?

In Europe we see plantings in Alsace, France, across many regions in Germany from the Mosel to the Rheinhessen and the Pfalz. Along with Grüner Veltinger, Riesling is widely planted in Austria.

In South Australia, the Clare Valley’s, Polish Hill and Watervale produce stunning Riesling. You’ll find great Riesling coming from the Eden Valley SA, Central Victoria, Canberra, Tasmania, and, from the Great Southern in WA.

There are some cracking Rieslings coming out of New Zealand too!

What does it taste like?

Fresher dry styles tend to have citrus aromas and flavours with floral blossoms. Riper styles introducing stone fruit.

From region to region winemaking changes from simple pressing of fruit and fermentation to dry in stainless steel to use of skin contact and maturation in oak. Layering in different textures and flavours.

Shifting gear to Germany and Alsace the game of balancing sugar, alcohol and acid comes into play. From dry 12.5-13% wines we shift to lower alcohol dry wines and then the freshest of the sweet wines, the Kabinett styles. Coming in with as little as 7.5% sugar the trick is achieving balance with higher acidity. From Kabinett we mover through an array of styles increasing in sweetness and alcohol, heading all the way to the very sweet botrytis style Trockenbeerenauslese & Icewein made from frozen grapes.

You can read more about the different styles of Riesling made in Germany in the Wine Bites Mag articles exploring Riesling.

Off-dry Riesling lends itself beautifully to pairing with many Asian foods. Aged, sweeter, botrytis styles are perfect with cheese and fresher fruit desserts. Fresh, citrus styles are perfect with seafood and lighter poultry.

White Blend from Alsace, France

Domaine Marcel Deiss 1er Cru ‘Burg’ 2015

Premier Cru action from Deiss! A blend of 12 Alsatian Varieties! I haven't had the chance to try this yet. Given the rest of the 2015 a looking great this should be excellent too. D'Agata's note below if for the 2012.(a mixture of all the usual Alsace varieties, with a predominance of Gewürtzraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris): Bright golden straw-yellow. The opulent nose features marmalady botrytis, honeyed tropical fruit and and sweet spice aromas. Densely packed, intense and showy, with ri

Markus Molitor Bernkastler Lay Auslese** 2019

White Cap - Dry "The lime-green-golden 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese ** (White Capsule) is deep, intense and concentrated yet elegant and still precise and flinty on the nose. The attack on the palate is stunningly young and vital before the elegant and crystalline wine reveals its complexity and inner power. This is a tightly structured, very digestible and still edgy Auslese that needs another 5-6 years or so to settle and shine. This 2019 is enormously salty on the finish and highly promising

Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett 2021

AP: 03 22. The 2021er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett AP 03 is a fruity-styled wine with a still quite restrained and smoky nose at first? It takes a while to reveal its complexity and finesse underlined by fine notes of stone fruit, lead pencil, herbs, bergamot, blackberry, cherry, violet, and lavender. The wine is still very tight on the palate but already hints at the greatness to come as there is great density and purity. The finish is still somewhat sharp yet its incredibly multi-layer

Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling 2024

“The 2024 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese offers wet stone and dried herbs on the nose, almost like deadnettle crushed on slate, with the tenderest smokiness. The palate then adds a gorgeous streak of ripe Reine Claude plum with a juiciness that softens the stone. It becomes agile, sinuous and animated. What lovely character, subtlety, elegance and astonishing saltiness this has that seemingly swallows most of the sweetness. Its subtle, stony length is remarkable.”Anne Krebiehl MW

A.J.Adam Dhroner Hofberg Auslese Riesling 2019

AP 17.20 The 2019er Hofberg Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made with clean fruit harvested at 98° Oechsle from the main hill of the vineyard, and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It is slightly reductive at first and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal its ripe and engaging nose of pineapple, candied grapefruit, apricot, pear puree, honey, raspberry, and smoke. The wine is superbly playful on the richly aromatic, honeyed, and sweet pal

Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett 2023

The 2023 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Kabinett is a little shy on the nose. The palate is light, pure, wonderfully citric and elegant. There is something utterly seductive about it that captures all the senses, almost by stealth. Its lightness and purity are otherworldly. The finish is pure lemon, long and serene. Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmerlreich Riesling Kabinett 2023

The 2023 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett opens with substantial depth and a brilliant bouquet of wet slate. The fruit is intense but not dominating, thanks to the flintiness and savoriness of the Himmelreich terroir. On the palate, this is a mouth-filling, dense and complex Kabinett with ripe, elegant and juicy fruit intertwined with very fine phenols and an ethereal slate thread that gives this Kabinett an enormous length and animation. This will be a superb gastronomic wine after a deca

Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2024

The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese offers a salty wet slate aroma with a savor reminiscent of lichen and citrus peel. All about it is precise, stony, linear, crystalline and bright. You almost forget that this is a Spätlese, as its sweetness and acidity seem to be bound absolutely to the sunken salty slate that makes the mouth water endlessly. The 2024 has brilliance, poise, absolute structure and very fine bones. The finish is full of lemon zest.Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous 95 Po

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling 2024

Great intensity and transparency! The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is a total tease. Aromatic citrus shimmers on the nose, uniting grapefruit, tangerine and bergamot scents. Citrus foliage adds an extra frisson of freshness. The palate homes in on that line between tartness and the ripe aroma that you find only in the most exquisite citrus fruits. The 2024 has an allure and fusion of impressions that is inextricable and therefore beguiling. It is simply wonderful, fresh, light and
