Ansitz Waldgries Südtiroler Weissburgunder Riserva ‘ITOS’ 2020

Weissburgunder | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

What he achieves by a combo of half vinified in stainless steel and half the ferments in barrel, is the ideal melding of the racy with the complex and textured. A pretty flash Weissburgunder AKA Pinot Bianco! Excellent drinking. A layer of that shroomy, wet wool earthy funk I often see, and enjoy in high acid whites. White flowers perfume. Ripe white grapefruit. Counterpointed with a little stonefruit, fresh and zippy. Chalky acid with a dusting of phenolics adds cleansing grip. Superb long

Delicious spiced, pear, perfumed with flowers, almost flinty, lovely phenolics, textural and fine, long and even, gentle, flowing, resolved. Savoury. Subtle layered intrigue. Fine acid profile. Bloody fun wine. The last time I had a Chasselas it was from an old planting in Victoria the origin of which I can’t remember. I ended up buying cases of it as a cleanskin for personal consumption. Its memory prompted me to try this wine from the “vineyard in the sky”. From the incredibl

Domaine de Beudon Petite Arvine AOC Valais 2020

White Blend | Valais, Switzeland

Lovely perfume and lift, textural almost Viognier & Traminer-seque. Big slippery oily phenolic texture. Exceptional perfume spice, marzipan, quince and fejoa, jasmine white flowers, great intensity. Very good. Delicacy with intensity and intrigue! A variety rarely seen outside Valais, Switzerland. Its standing demonstrated by attempts from Angelo Gaja and Michel Chapoutier to work with this somewhat belligerent grape to grow. From Valais in Switzerland and one of the world’s

New Cuvée from 2021 – A parcel in chaume worked separately. This terroir is often used for sweet wines. Makes a great dry according to Thomas (...and Me!) highlighting again the importance of the flavour and phenolics from the skins. Yields of just 15-20Hl/Ha from very old vines give us a wine that is a delight in the glass! Half to ⅓ of DRC's yields!  Fermentation in new wood aged in the same wood for 1 year then 5 months in stainless. This is the same as for the Bastingage. F

Georges Deschamps Chablis 2022

Chardonnay | France, Burgundy

A richer more immediately generous iteration than the 2021 yet with a delicacy and elegance. Perfumed fruit ripe gold apple a little lemon oil at play and a salty pop. Delicous long fine, supple. Excellent texture, line and length, impressive élévage and that all important mid-palate weight. Complexed by the long slow ferment and time on lees. Great drinking.

For all the many great things that can be told about Giacosa’s red wines, it is the Arneis that maybe typifies the great qualities of Bruno Giacosa the man. In the early 1970’s, this was an indigenous variety almost entirely lost to the region’s obsession with red wines (at the time mainly Dolcetto) that was ‘rediscovered’ by Alfredo Currado of Vietti and Giacosa very shortly after. The two are almost solely responsible for Arneis’ current importance in the region, especially in Roer

Looking good! Fresh, style with a nice phenolic grip and cleansing astringency with crunchy mineral acid. Serious Chenin here. A big jump from the Midi. Lambert appears to be working with a little more phenolic extract adding a playful grip and cleansing astringency. Very complete and flowing. David’s extra time in old oak and a 2nd winter in tank give it harmony and refinement, flowing with a real step up in sophistication. Super zippy, mineral acid with the core of fruit to support it. Building generosity and freshness in the glass on a fine crisp acidity. Heading more strongly down the quinc

Pieropan Soave ‘Calvarino’ MAGNUM 2021

White Blend | Veneto, Italy

The name 'Calvarino' translates to 'small ordeal'. Andrea Pieropan told us it was named after the hill Jesus was crucified on reflecting how difficult the soil is to work and the tortuous path which winds from top to bottom. The 2021 is the 50th Anniversary release & it is an excellent Calvarino. Vibrant and energetic with a perfume of white flowers and an excellent core of fruit. Thirst quenching. Well developed, no puppy fat here. Long and fine with a savoury twist. Chalky with a fine l

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière HALF 2020

Sauvignon Blanc | Sancerre, France

There’s Sauvignon and then there is Sauvignon from Sancerre. There’s Sancerre and then there is Dagenau. Then a pack chasing him. Mellot right at the front of that pack. Beautiful poise, delicacy and vertical long shape to the palate. Lovely bright fruit that has shifted beyond primary to aromas and flavours of intrigue. Crisp fine acid. This is an impressive drink. There’s a little passion fruit and gooseberry if you look for it. Overall it’s just a wonderful seemless Sauvignon Blanc.

A.Rodda ‘Baxendale’ Whitlands Chardonnay 2022

Chardonnay | Victoria, Australia

The latest addition to Adrian's Chardonnay range. The Baxendale is supple plush, clean & long. For mine the most immediately approachable Australian Chardonnay just keeps getting better and better. Last year I was tasting a line of OK white Burgundy then moved onto A.Rodda's Chardonnays & BOOM! They're superb wines. The Baxendale is supple plush, clean & long. For mine the most immediately approachable. The acid a bit more resolved. Oak nicely balanced, edge of pithy stuff. Florals, c

Nascetta - Italy's answer to Gewurztraminer. Fragrant, spicy and fresh. This is a fun, youthful wine that is drinking well now but could possibly benefit from a little more time to develop, allowing the fruit and underlying structure to better harmonise. Wonderful aromas come swinging out of the glass, with pops of pity citrus, yellow stone fruits, white blossoms and a line of saline minerality. Arneis | Roero, Italy

Arneis makes such beautiful wine. Morish and refreshing. A beautiful wine! Arneis makes such beautiful wine. Vietti's has a sophistication that gives restraint to the core of fruit that has great depth and length. Maple and a hint of baking spice layer on top of white nectarine and friends. Supple with just an edge of chalking phenolic grip, it has that wondeful silvery line of bitterness that cleans he palate up so well. Morish and refreshing. A beautiful wine! "... Selbach Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling 2017

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

This is a beauty, graceful with a certain transparency to it. The freshness, combined with excellent depth and length is classic Kabinett. It's the texture and flow that separate Shaun's Dapple wines from others! Excellent density, line and length with chalky, mineral ,saline acid and succulent fruit. Serious mid-palate depth. Calm and patient winemaking showing. After 4 hours in the glass only a month after bottling, it starts to reveal itself. Wagner-Stempel Riesling Porphyr 2017

Riesling | Siefersheim, Germany

Beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. We often get seduced by opulence. Daniel's 2015's from sites yielding some of the ripest fullest fruit in the Rheinhessen certainly have such seduction. The 2016 Porphyr, beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. Such a sophisticated wine of great line and length.

"The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 83° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (45 g/l). It offers a superbly engaging nose made of pear, elderflower, cassis, vineyard peach, a touch of apricot blossom, and a hint of whipped cream. Château Pierre-Bise Savennières ‘Clos de Coulaine’ 2018

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

The extra couple of years here gives us an idea of where the 2020 Roche Aux Moines will head. Honeyed, lemon, baking spices a little of the lanolin character that seems to come through in Chenin from Anjou-Samur. Again the transparency of pear fruit with textural phenolic elements at play. Divine wine. Thirst quenching and delicious.
