Larger Bottles 1-15L

Sometimes a single bottle just doesn’t befit the occasion!

When you need to celebrate in style a magnum is the minimum.

Wisdom suggests the larger the bottle the slower the wine inside will age.

There’s another interesting factor when it comes to bottle fermented sparkling like Champagne. The fermentation ‘kinetics’ the way the wine ferments in magnum just seems to give the Champagne magnums the edge in quality over single bottles.

Maybe it’s just the party environment!

Here’s a list of different wine bottle sizes.

1.5L Magnum = 2 x 750 ml bottles.

3.0L Double Magnum – Jeroboam = 2 x Magnums or 4 x 750ml bottles.

4.5L Jeroboam (aka Rehoboam) = 6 x 750 ml bottles. (Jeroboam is either 3 or 4.5 L depending on what part of France you’re in)

6.0L Imperial (aka Methuselah) = 8 x 750 ml bottles or 2 x Double Magnums.

9.0L Salmanazar = 12 x 750 ml bottles or a full case of wine!

12.0L Balthazar = 16 x 750 ml bottles or two Imperials.

15.0L Nebuchadnezzar = 20 x 750 ml bottles or the name of the ship in the Matrix.

18.0 L Solomon (aka Melchoir) = 24 x 750 ml bottles.

Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the few Great Estates of Barolo. “Like tasting young Romanée-Conti” James Suckling Back in 2005, during my first trip to Italy, I spotted a bottle of Aldo Conterno on the list of fine restaurant in Turin, just to the north of Barolo. Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino MAGNUM 2021

I’d love to compare it directly to the 2021 Soldera and Poggio di Sotto. A wine from a maker with intent. It’s clear there is quality fruit here.Researching the Brunello, I came across Galloni's notes on the 2010 Brunello. "In all of my years tasting the wines of Montalcino, I have only come across two wines with this level of textural unctuosity and sweetness; Gianfranco Soldera's 1983 Brunello and 1990 Riserva."There is not a more emphatic statement that could be made about the cap

Dr Bürklin-Wolf Riesling Forster ‘Pechstein’ Grand Cru MAGNUM 2021

Bürklin's 2021 Pechstein G.C. shows a deep, pure, intense and saline, very complex and elegant bouquet of concentrated tropical fruit aromas intertwined with flinty, iodine and citrus aromas. Pure, very intense and concentrated on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, iodine-inflected and stimulatingly saline Pechstein with fine tannins and a long, dense, complex and tensioned finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2029-2055Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine

Massolino “Vigna Rionda” Barolo MAGNUM 2019

An explosion of flowers and fruit leaps from the glass. The extra 2 years in bottle prior to release clearly show their impact. Through puberty. Incredible. It will need time to resolve and for the tight 2019 tannins of presence yet ripeness with a degree of firmness to resolve, which they will and when they do we're in for a treat. A transparency here. Aroma and flavours building with a layer of secondary characters, a lick of truffles and forest floor. A superb core of dark rich long

Stunning immediate red fruits, wicked acid and epic long, even structured tannin. Serralunga to a T. Pun intended, for it has fine black tea aroma and flavours. Insane depth & a long, even core of fruit. Deceptive richness, drive & purity. Savoury. Impressive wine that will take time to reveal its true self. Recommend minimum 7 years in bottle. While Vietti's Villero is their Top Wine. This is my favorite! The 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is elegant, floral and lifted. I also find it a bit reticent in the early going. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, white pepper and spice open with some coaxing. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon, the wine's considerable sensuality notwithstanding.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96+ PointsThis is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work und

Vietti Barolo ‘Cerequio’ MAGNUM 2021

Much more impact at the front end of the palate with a pleasing build in grip compared to the plush Brunate. Linear, long and fine. Lovely flowers. Long, even fruit of significant depth, with a lick of leather throwing in tar/slate/licorice complexity. Opening the class to reveal more opulence. Acid tannin complex is exceptional. Superb structure. The perfume is insane. Wow, as this builds in the glass, it builds in class, just opening beautifully. A lot of power.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sep

Cracking Brunate! A very complete wine. Tannins are so refined, even through the front and middle palate. Round chocolateyt mid-palate that tapers a little. Incredibly elegant,  again a poised acid-tannin complex with ripe, layered, silky tannin. Actually builds post swallow. Perfectly ripe and balanced. Incredible length. The core of fruit is insane. Vietti Barolo ‘Monvigliero’ MAGNUM 2021

This is the baby in the bunch, representing one of the newest additions to the Vietti portfolio, with the first vintage produced in 2018. The learning curve in Monvigliero is always steep, or so most winemakers tell me, because very few can go to 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Indeed, the 2021 Barolo Monvigliero sees 60% whole clusters. The Vietti team is experienced, and this wine is pristine. This vintage was harvested on September 30th, and maceration was a bit shorter, at 20 days. The wine

Pretty, red fruit. Beautifully developed. Impeccable élévage. An underlying tar/leather/slate notes layering in intriguing complexity. The Vietti crew have built quite a lot of structure into this Ravera of Novello. A wonderful example of Ravera making for a very complex iteration. Lovely generosity. Fine plush Neb tannin. Divine roses. Impressive!  Bud-break & harvest is around 2-3 weeks later than most of the other Communes for Vietti.Paul Kaan, WINE DECODED Sept 2025The 202
