Larger Bottles 1-15L

Sometimes a single bottle just doesn’t befit the occasion!

When you need to celebrate in style a magnum is the minimum.

Wisdom suggests the larger the bottle the slower the wine inside will age.

There’s another interesting factor when it comes to bottle fermented sparkling like Champagne. The fermentation ‘kinetics’ the way the wine ferments in magnum just seems to give the Champagne magnums the edge in quality over single bottles.

Maybe it’s just the party environment!

Here’s a list of different wine bottle sizes.

1.5L Magnum = 2 x 750 ml bottles.

3.0L Double Magnum – Jeroboam = 2 x Magnums or 4 x 750ml bottles.

4.5L Jeroboam (aka Rehoboam) = 6 x 750 ml bottles. (Jeroboam is either 3 or 4.5 L depending on what part of France you’re in)

6.0L Imperial (aka Methuselah) = 8 x 750 ml bottles or 2 x Double Magnums.

9.0L Salmanazar = 12 x 750 ml bottles or a full case of wine!

12.0L Balthazar = 16 x 750 ml bottles or two Imperials.

15.0L Nebuchadnezzar = 20 x 750 ml bottles or the name of the ship in the Matrix.

18.0 L Solomon (aka Melchoir) = 24 x 750 ml bottles.

Lustrous ruby. Concentrated fruit with minerally notes and grows increasingly complex in the glass. Full yet elegant on the palate with finely chiselled tannins. Breathtaking balance. Simply gorgeous, but far from ready. Montalcino nobility.Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson 18+ PointsKO 100 DC 100 EG 96 ML 94

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos de La Hutte’ MAGNUM 2020

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

”The 2020 Clos de la Hutte is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières ‘Clos de La Hutte’ MAGNUM 2022

Chenin Blanc | Savennières, D'Anjou-Saumur

Clos de la Hutte is always a stunning wine. My note on the 2021 read: "Epically good, long and fine. Harmony, seamless, delicacy with mid-palate presence and length. Nuanced, refined texture lined by superb phenolics. White flowers, super fresh white stone fruit, quince, hints of lemon oil & bees wax.  A little crème patissiere & baking spice. Intoxicating. Massive competitor with 1er Chassage, Puligny, Meursault. Incredible length."Although it's ungenerous on the nose, the

Domaine Thierry Violot-Guillemard Pommard 1er 'Clos de Derrière Saint-Jean' Monopole MAGNUM 2018
MAGNUM ONLY 290 MADE!
Bottled in Magnum only, 290 bottled. This tiny monopole of the Domaine measures only 9.81 ares or the equivalent of only one-quarter of an acre; planted in 1947. This was de-stemmed, fermented in barrel, no pigeage and was not offered for tasting. Comes in its own wooden box.My note from the 2016:Opens with juicy crunchy fruit that takes just a little while to settle in. More immediately overt than the others. There’s a build in tannin here that when you relate it back to the viney

"Aromas of ripe plum, spice, damp earth and the sauvage are trimmed in admirably discreet wood. There is fine richness and volume to the sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors that are quite saline in character, all wrapped in a relatively powerful, palate coating and long if mildly rustic finish. This too is an impressive villages and recommended. ♥ Outstanding Top value"Allen Meadows, Burghound

Luciano Sandrone Barolo ‘Le Vigne’ MAGNUM 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo (sub-region)

Bugger! The investors are onto it! An excellent Le Vigne. The restraint in oak use is clever, discrete, just a beuatiful layer. Going back to the 2013 the wood was more overt on release. Today the 2013’s are fully resolved and wonderfully layered. The 2019 is complex, refined & elegant, with vibrant fruit & faded flowerst. A delicacy with great density of fruit. Remaining refreshing. The heart shape of Novello, the faded flowers of Villero the combination of tannin profiles making f

Another high point of the range is the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées, a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety wine evocative of dark berries, licorice, sweet soil tones and potpourri. Vibrant and intense, it's a serious cuvée, built to age.William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 90-92 Points

Two of the best value Neb's on the market have to be Vietti's Castiglione Barolo and this wine Vietti's Perbacco! The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is another terrific entry-level wine from Vietti. In this vintage, the Perbacco is especially fine. Sweet dried cherry, herbs, mint, crushed flowers, anise and orange peel grace this striking, alluring Nebbiolo. There's tons of depth and sheer pedigree, things that have not always been present in recent editions. For years, Perbacco was a very seriou

Massolino “Parafada” Barolo MAGNUM 2021

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Planted in 1957, Parafada was the Massolino family’s first prime parcel in Serralunga. It is still home to their oldest vines. Legend has it that Giovanni Massolino planted these vines when he was just 17 years old! Today these 69-year-old vines produce smaller berries with more concentrated fruit as a result. Located between Gabutti and Lazzarito, Massolino’s 1.2-hectare parcel rises steeply from 300 to 340 metres above sea level and faces due south, catching the full face of the sun. The a

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape MAGNUM 2022

Rhône Blend | Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf du Pape

Despite a hailstorm that destroyed approximately one-third of the crop this year, Paul-Vincent Avril managed to produce a wine with the same grape proportions as in previous years, thanks to his vineyard's diverse and fragmented nature. So, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes reveals a delicate, aromatic bouquet of peony, gooseberry, lilac, flowers and cherries mingled with delicate notes of fennel and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, sappy and layered, it's perfectly textured with v

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape MAGNUM 2020

Rhône Blend | Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf du Pape

"A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah and other permitted varieties, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looked exceptional on this day, offering up scents of framboise and kirsch alongside dried flowers and Asian spices. Full-bodied yet weightless, silky and long, this is special stuff, complex and balanced. "The phenolic maturity is there, the sugars are there," Avril said. "No, it won't be like 2019, but I think we will come in around 14.5–15 degrees [of alcohol]. I think, I don'

Once again proving PdB's Barbaresco is a great benchmark! After first tasting the 2021 in Nov 2024, I've shifted into drinking mode! Every bottle has been delicious. Without question it is the best vintage since 2016.It's looking sharp straight out of the gate & will clearly offer much more with time. Fresh & energetic, light on it's feet yet of great depth & length. Elegant, & fine with excellent front mid-palate shape. The tannins are of serious quality with a playful gr
