A completely different aromatic profile is proffered by the nose of intensely sauvage, smoky dark currant and plum. The delicious and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors possess good power on the serious and lingering finish that is borderline rustic. Excellent development potential here. Readers will face an enjoyable challenge determining whether they prefer the brilliant 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers or its 2019 predecessor, though sadly, in 2020 there are only four barrels—around 1,200 bottles—for a thirsty world. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, orange zest and exotic spices, the wine is full-bodied, supple and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a deep, concentrated mid-palate and a long, perfumed finish. Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape MAGNUM 2020

Rhône Blend | Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf du Pape

"A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah and other permitted varieties, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looked exceptional on this day, offering up scents of framboise and kirsch alongside dried flowers and Asian spices. Full-bodied yet weightless, silky and long, this is special stuff, complex and balanced. "The phenolic maturity is there, the sugars are there," Avril said. "No, it won't be like 2019, but I think we will come in around 14.5–15 degrees [of alcohol]. I think, I don'

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

There is something here that takes Sangiovese to a special place, the perfume, the lovely linear shape of fruit, that deceptive depth and length that builds! A captivating mix of ripe plums, strawberries, cloves, violet pastille, balsam herbs and white smoke emanates from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. This is undeniably elegant in feel, showing a weight unexpected from a young Poggio di Sotto, yet working in perfect harmony, with tart cherries and wild berries drenching the palate in primary

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2018

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

There is something here that takes Sangiovese to a special place, the perfume, the lovely linear shape of fruit, that deceptive depth and length that builds! Poggio di Sotto hits it out the ballpark once again with an extremely elegant interpretation that shows the incredible depth and nuance Sangiovese can achieve, even in an uneven vintage such as this. The certified organic 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark ruby hue and mid-weight concentration. Indeed, the wine is lighter and bright

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Bric dël Fiasc’ MAGNUM 2021

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Castiglione Falletto

The 2021 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Red toned-fruit, chalk, white pepper, dried herbs and exotic citrus notes soar out of the glass. Bruno Giacosa Barolo 2020

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

All of Giacosa’s Barolo wines are single vineyard offerings, and the same is true for the Classico where all of the fruit in the years it is produced comes from Falletto in Serralunga d’Alba. The most recent vintage of Barolo ‘Classico’ is 2020. In the years where a Barolo ‘Classico’ a Barolo ‘Falletto’ and a Barolo ‘Falletto Vigna Le Rocche’ are all produced concurrently (such as 2016), the fruit for the Barolo ‘Classico’ will usually come from the lower and less expose

The Giuseppe Mascarello 2018 Barolo Monprivato reveals an open and accessible personality. This wine is an immediate charmer. I tasted these wines with the Mascarello family seated across the table from me, and during our chat, they explained that this was a gratifying vintage in terms of farming and winemaking. The growing season was not too hot, and high alcohol levels were not an issue, they say. In the case of this wine, we are greeted to mild tannins and a pretty bouquet with delicate flora

Roagna Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti 2015

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barbaresco

The 2015 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is a great example of this site. Iron, smoke, crushed rocks, sage, mint and licorice bring out the wilder, savory side of this Barbaresco vineyard. Firm and muscular in the glass, with striking depth, the 2015 has so much to offer. It does need at least a few years in bottle to be at its best.Galloni
