Nebbiolo from La Morra, Barolo

Paolo Scavino Barolo ‘Bricco Ambrogio’ MAGNUM 2021

The 2021 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is classy and polished to the core. This wine has come such a long way since its debut. Enrico Scavino really believed in this site when he purchased it a little more than 20 years ago. The 2021 is a fine testament to his vision. Lavender, sage, menthol and licorice lead into a core of dark-toned fruit in a Barolo that is deep yet also light on its feet. This is impeccably done, not to mention very tasty. Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis ‘Vigna San Giuseppe’ 2012

This is one of the benchmark traditional Barolo's from a classic years! Every time I’ve tried Cavallotto’s ‘Vigna San Guiseppe’ I’ve gone to a very happed place. The core of fruit in is always insane. Having tasted a dozen of the best Baroli alongside Vigna San Guiseppe over many vintages, it’s clear this is up at the top of the list. Cavallotto’s always beautifully balances power with elegance.

Pinot Noir from Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er ‘Chaffots’ 2016

A discreet but not invisible hint of volatile acidity adds lift to the well-layered nose of black cherry, violet, lavender and subtle earth and spice hints. The muscular and energetic broad-shouldered flavors offer excellent punch and depth on the driving and firmly structured finish. Assuming that the VA remains at its current level, it shouldn't be more than a background element.Allen Meadows, Burghound

Pinot Noir from Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er ‘Chaffots’ 2017

A cool, pure and relatively high-toned nose combines aromas of essence of red cherry, lilac, violet, lavender and plenty of earth character. There is better concentration to the nicely powerful and muscular flavors that culminate in a robust finale and while the finish still comes across as grippy, the tannins seem riper.Burghound

Nebbiolo from Gattinara, Alto Piemonte

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Molsino’ 2019

The 2019 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding wine. Smoke, incense, licorice and leather open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A wine of tremendous persistence and presence, the Molsino is so impressive in 2019. It is also embryonic and in need of cellaring. The only question is how long. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural resonance, offering a glimpse of what will come in time. Drink 2029-2049Antonio Galloni, Vinous 97 Points

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Valferana’ 2019

The 2019 Gattinara Valferrana is a dark, potent wine. It deftly marries fruit intensity with elegance, with deep notes of lavender, spice, menthol and crushed rocks. Time in the glass is works wonders here. If anything, I may have underestimated this last year! Drink 2027-2049Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96+ Points

Red Blend from Etna, Sicily

Terre Nere ‘Prephylloxera’ Etna Rosso D.O.C. The vineyard of Don Peppino 2022

To taste wine from 140 year old vines that has not been influenced by growing on a rootstock is becoming a rare thing at a global level. Darkly alluring and youthfully backward, the 2022 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana smolders up with a blend of sweet spices, dusty violets and ash, giving way to dried black cherries, sage and cloves. This is velvety yet finessed, with a polished wave of ripe red and blue fruit that flows across a juicy stream of acidity. Hint

Spanna from Gattinara, Alto Piemonte

Nervi-Conterno Gattinara ‘Molsino’ 2014

The 2014 Gattinara Molsino is shy and introverted in its first impression, with quite a bit of intensity lurking in the background. Today, the Molsino is not as expressive as the Valferana, but its day will come. With a bit of aeration, the 2014 starts to show the structure, layers of nuance and resonance that will emerge more fully in time.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 94 PointsHard not to take notice wine Roberto Conterno decided to drop some coin on a new vineyard! Pinot Noir from Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er ‘Chaffots’ 2018

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots wafts from the glass with aromas of plums, cinnamon, peonies, orange rind and raw cocoa. Medium-bodied, fine-boned and lively, it's bright and nicely concentrated, with youthfully chalky tannins and a saline finish. As usual, this is one of the more tightly wound premiers crus in the range, with an elegant, rather ethereal profile, and it will reward bottle age.William Kelley, Parker's Wine Advocate
