Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Ostréa 2022

A beautifully layered if somewhat reserved nose grudgingly offers up its array of wild dark berries, anise and violet scents. The delicious, concentrated and caressing medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of refinement on the slightly less powerful mineral-driven finish. This is qualitatively similar to the straight Gevrey villages but the two wines are quite different. Nebbiolo from Neive, Barbaresco

Barale Barbaresco ‘Serraboella’ MAGNUM 2019

They understand the rule book so have thrown it away only to be used when they know they need to. I guess that's what 150 years of making wine can give you! The 2016 of this was a cracker. True to the vintage & site with bold yet refined structure. The 2019 is again a cracker and true to vintage. This time all grace and elegance from what is proving a classic year.Beautifully weighted, the body of this slightly warmer vineyard with the clarity and sophistication of 2019 Barbaresco. Rich

Nebbiolo from Commune di Barolo, Barolo

Luciano Sandrone Barolo ‘Le Vigne’ 2021

Bugger! The investors are onto it! The harmony Sandrone achieves with the 'Le Vigne' blend is impressive. The sum of parts is always greater than the whole! Like Bartolo Mascarello and Monfortino an argument for blending over single vineyard wines! This is a blend of fruit from Le Costa di Monforte in Monforte d'Alba, Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. Vietti Barolo Riserva 2015
1st Release of Barolo Riserva!

Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

Vietti Barolo Riserva 2015

Show the class of the vineyards and the winemakers! Here's an exciting new submission from Vietti that takes us to a whole other level (and evolutionary timeframe). A very late release that is held back at the winery, the 2015 Barolo Riserva sources its fruit solely from Castiglione Falletto. In fact, it represents a special section of the best sites that go into the Barolo Castiglione. Some of that fruit was so impressive, I am told, the decision was made to age it longer (with up to 30 months

Vietti Barbaresco ‘Masseria Roncaglie’ 2020

The 2020 Barbaresco, from vines in Roncaglie, sizzles with tension. Bright, red-toned fruit, orange peel, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, the Roncaglie is quite showy. That is hardly the case in 2020, a vintage in which the wine is classically austere and in need of time. Super-classic.Antoni Galloni, Vinous 94+ PointsThe Vietti 2020 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria has bright rose, cherry, redcurrant and angel food cake with stra

Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino ‘Piero’ 2019

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Piero is impossible to ignore, slowly blossoming with an enticing blend of spice-dusted blackberries, violet pastille and orange zest. This impresses further with its vividly ripe wild berry fruits and juicy acidity. Tactile mineral tones add contrast, and rosy inner florals form toward the close. The 2019 lingers impossibly long, taking on a spicy edge, as the palate is left reverberating with zesty tension, even as fine-grained tannins grip the senses. The Pier

Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Chambolle-Musigny Vielles-Vignes 2019

Initially there is a touch of reduction though aggressive swirling slowly reveals overtly floral-suffused nose that is comprised mostly by attractively spicy red and dark berries aromas. There is excellent volume to the rich but appealingly delineated medium-bodied flavors that also exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finish. Garnacha from Gratallops, Priorat

Àlvaro Palacios ‘Finca Dolfi’ 2017

I had the pleasure of devouring the 2016 about 6 months ago over an aged scotch fillet with a friend. A wine of presence and importance. Along with the other Priorats I've had from Àlvaro it's clear he's got it right in both the vineyard and the winery. After all, to make a wine like the legendary L'Ermita you need mad skills! The single-vineyard 2017 Finca Dofí comes from ten hectares that were planted 20 years ago in the village of Gratallops. It’s mostly Garnacha with 8% Cari

Domenico Clerico Barolo ‘Ciabot Mentin’ 2021

On the day tasting all of the 2021 Barolos side by side the Clerico 'Ciabot Mentin' and the Barolo di Monforte were drinking the best. The joy of wine and the quality of the full range will see any of exceptional 2021's be called WOTN over time! Exceptional depth and length, the 'Ciabot Mentin' is an epic wine with stunning tannins. Alpine spice. Fresh with so much power yet elegance. Like Pajana I can’t wait to see this fully resolved and build complexity. Even on the day it was building in t

Giovanni Sordo Barolo ‘Monprivato’ 2015

Earthy and savoury with great depth and length. Incredible core of fruit. So many layers of flavour and tannin, just so much to get from this wine. Such purity, detail, so fine, it draws you in! Update Nov 2024: Drinking superbly. Incredible complexity. Layered with fine, long, flowing tannins. Ridgey's cranberries and faded flowers on full display. Delicious, expressive drinking straight out of the gate showing the typical immediate approachability of Sordo (and many other's) 2015 Barolos. Cle
