Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Pajé’ 2019

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is full of character. Strong mineral, savory and floral notes jump out of the glass, before veins of tannin make themselves felt on the palate. A powerful, young Barbaresco, the Pajè is going to need a number of years to come into its own. That said, all of its signatures are very much present.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 93 Points KO 98*NOTE Galloni tasted in Sept 2023 noting his intent to look at the PdB Riservas in 12 months expecting they will resolv

Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Montefico’ 2019

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most searingly tannic wines in the range. Readers will have to be patient with the 2019, as it is going to need time. As always, Montefico is a Barbaresco built on linear intensity more than size. In 2019, the qualities are quite accented. Time in the glass opens the bouquet nicely, but the 2019 remains quite closed.Antonio Galloni, Vinous 93+ Points KO 98*NOTE Galloni tasted in Sept 2023 noting his intent to look at the PdB Riserva

‘Les Corbeaux’ is bordered one side by the Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin! Takes me to a very happy place! ‘Les Corbeaux’ is bordered one side by the Grand Cru Mazis Chambertin and the other by the village of Gevrey. The 2022 is mid to deeply coloured with juicy and vibrant fruit characters of cherry kernel, cassis, liquorice, blackberry and plum, a classy sheen of new oak frames the aromas. The tannings are super silky and fine, its really elegant and superbly balanced but as the wine op

Again restraint and expression with excellent composure. The subtle well integrated stalk tannin and spice play with old vine freshness and elegance. Flowing with great harmony. Layered, lovely red fruit with a silkiness. A little savoury almost blood orange and pinch of salt. Straight out of the gate looking good. Rose and spice. Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Ovello’ 2021

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello shows greater richness and structure on the mid-palate, with ripe and supple flavors of red and purple fruit that give the wine an especially generous personality. This is a concentrated expression of Nebbiolo, yet it remains direct, sharp and beautifully focused, fully living up to the reputation of this highly collectible vintage. The added depth of fruit is balanced by freshness, creating a wine that is both powerful and elegantly c

Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva ‘Muncogato’ 2021

The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is laced with strong floral and savory notes. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its driving, tense personality. I expect those qualities will be positives for the future, but today the Muncagota is pretty forbidding. Give this time. This is one of the most tense editions of this wine I can remember tasting. The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is deep, dense wine. Strong spice and balsamic notes wrap around a core of dark-toned fruit. A brooding, packed powerhouse, the Pajè needs a number of years to be at its most expressive. This is classic Pajè all way, dialed up to eleven. Pinot Noir from Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 2017

I first tried Hubert Lignier's wines back in the 1990's & have never looked back! Lignier is one of the latest to release their wines. The extra year really makes a difference as the wines resolve and come together. The Morey-Saint-Denis has the hallmark red fruit of the village. This is what Pinot is like when everything comes together! Here too the nose of both red and dark cherry, earth and humus is on the toasty side. The sleek, refined and vibrant lighter weight flavors exhibit fine detail on the lingering and much better balanced finish. This is a bit light but it is undeniably pretty.Burghound

Sangiovese from Greve UGA, Chianti Classico

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2018

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is quite possibly the most elegant, refined version of this wine I have ever tasted. It does not offer the immediacy or impact of either the 2015 or 2016, but, instead, impresses with its elegance, persistence and total class. Bright floral and spice notes add perfume to a core of red-toned fruit. The 2018 represents another move towards greater finesse at Fontodi. It spent a year in French oak barrel and a second year in cask.Antonio

Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte-de-Nuits

Domaine Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin ‘La Justice’ 2018

This is what Pinot is like when everything comes together! The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice (négoce) bursts with aromas of plums, berries, peonies and undergrowth. Medium to full-bodied, supple and textural, it's broad and sumptuous, framed by fine-grained tannins. Lignier told me that the vines in this parcel really suffered in the drought, and even though it came in at a classical 13.1% alcohol, it's comparatively high in pH.William Kelley, Parker's Wine Advocate
