A mildly toasty nose is comprised by notes of red and dark cherry, raspberry and newly turned earth. The rich and caressing medium weight flavors are at once succulent but powerful while delivering fine length on the decidedly firm but not really austere finale. This too offers very fine quality in a built-to-age package. Allen Meadows, Burghound

Fascinating drinking here. More down the strawberry line. With excellent harmony. This is divine, violets and underlying savoury notes. Another excercise in textural difference. Arvelet so even fine and plush, derrière building in structure, Fremier super high quality tannins with a very slight mid-palate prominence and wonderful length of tannin. Drinking these wines side by side is a demonstration in the diversity of Pommard, a celebration of the differences between vineyards.

A cooler and quite pretty nose combines notes of plum, red and dark raspberry along with spice and floral top notes. The finer and more seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This firmly structured effort could use a bit more depth, but more will almost certainly develop over the course of time. Good stuff here. ♥ Sweet spot Outstanding Drink 2030+ Burghound, 92 Points

A brooding and still very primary nose offers up liqueur-like notes of dark cherry, raspberry, anise and a hint of wood. There is excellent verve to the utterly delicious flavors that also possess excellent delineation before concluding in a mineral-laden and sneaky long finale. This is lovely and worth a look. ♥ Outstanding Drink 2028+ Burghound, 91 Points

Tasting this in Apr 2024 it showed sophistication refinement of tannin, stunning flow and harmony. Deeply layered and delicious. A note differing to Guitiérrez' and perhaps a factor of being some 2 years older when tasted. Delicious. The 2018 Roda I is in line with the other 2018s, lower alcohol, grainier tannins and a little more earthy rusticity that to me translates into more character and less polished wines. This was a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha from 30+-y

The Super Stars!
Lifting the level to Sordo's Riserva Range is always Fun! Winery Direct from an exceptional Barolo Year! Fabulous, both in itself and as a contrast to Villero. Where Villero is delicate and persistent, all finesse, Rocche is much more forceful with a similar range of characters. Everything is darker, deeper and more. The glory of this pre-eminent cru is the combo of style and power; how such waves and complexities stay in such long and vibrant shape. A great Barolo here. All aged releases hav

Lifting the level to Sordo's Riserva Range is always Fun! Winery Direct from an exceptional Barolo Year! Update Dec 2023 Devoured at a Christmas function, the 2004 Perno is right in the zone. Sitting in that perfectly mature spot. Earthy and truffled, seamless and harmonious, poised, balanced, flowing and delicious. This aged Barolo is in its prime drinking beautifully. A perfect match to dry-aged duck breast with a white truffle and cured cherry sauce at Al Dente. From my experience o

The Bold!

Giovanni Sordo Barolo Riserva ‘Gabutti’ 2004

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

The 2004 Riserva we see the parallels with the 2016, 2015 & 2008. The long structure is there, the complexity has built further, the wine is now fully comfortable wearing it's own skin, having resolved and built generosity. Of the 2015 it was clear that there was no chance to mistake the Gabutti, with its abundance of darker things; stock, porcini, graphite, smoke and black cherry. Under this very typical Serralunga ‘tarry/earthy’ mantle though, are other complexities of dried roses, orange

Boillot has always done a remarkable job with this vineyard and 2016 will only add to that track record. There is gorgeous complexity to the fresh and notably ripe red berry fruit, humus and pungent earth scented nose. The succulent, dense and powerful broad-shouldered flavors brim with copious dry extract that mostly manages to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the superbly long finish that flashes just a trace of Nuits style rusticity. This very serious and built-to-age effort is breathtaki

Borgogno Barolo ‘Cannubi’ DOCG 2016

Nebbiolo | Piedmont, Barolo

"The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is the first Borgogno Barolo made from organically farmed vineyards, which represents a pretty significant shift here. Bright and beautifully lifted in the glass, the Cannubi is so expressive today. Succulent red berry fruit, spice, blood orange, rose petal and star anise build as this sensual, open-knit Barolo shows off its allure, which is considerable." Galloni, Vinous

San Leonardo 2016

Red Blend | Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Filled with personality this is an exceptional Bordeaux blend from Trentino. Subtle lick of very good oak wrapping this on first pour. Coffee, mocha at play over a cassis and tobacco background. This has the classic hallmarks of San Leonardo in Harmony with just a little more oak. It falls into place very quickly with just moments in the glass, the wine comes together and fruit generosity builds. The overwhelming sensibility is of fresh energetic fruit that has been developed beautifully pre-bo

Luigi Pira Barolo ‘Vigna Rionda’ 2018

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

In recent times, Vigna Rionda gets spoken about as the grand cru of the Langhe – altitude, exposure and soil profile play an integral part. As expected, this is Giampaolo’s flagship wine. The oak regime is similar to the ‘Marenca’ but with a larger portion of newer oak – around 30%. Ultra-powerful and layered in fragrances, flavours and textures. Smoke, graphite, incense, stock/porcini, sweet tobacco, violets. All this character is underpinned by a fierce, tingling acid line and a comp

Here the nose is noticeably riper yet still agreeably fresh with its array darker berries, spice and discreet floral hints, especially violet. The middleweight flavors are rich to the point of opulence thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that enrobes the supporting tannins on the sneaky long finish. This is a very good wine for its level though it would be fair to observe that it's not a typical Chambolle villages. Drink 2026+ Allen Meadows, Burghound 89 Points ♥ Ou

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Chianti Classico

‘The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is one of the most backward editions of this wine I can remember tasting. Dark and almost somber, the Vigna del Sorbo packs a ton of intensity in its deceptively mid-weight frame. In many vintages, Vigna del Sorbo is quite showy in its youth. That is not at all the case with the 2020, a wine that will require many years to be at its best. Hints of lavender, dried herbs, plum and graphite appear over time, but the 2020 is very clearly
