Exploring the red wine world will take you from lighter more elegant wines to brash, bold wines.

There are infinite combinations of different colours, aromas, flavours, and, textures making for a lifelong pleasure fest for your senses.

A dozen varieties make up the majority of the red wines produced. Think Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Merlot.

Are travels to Italy, Spain, and, France have seen more Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Nerello Mascelese, Grenache, Carignan, and, Tempranillo red wines being poured into our glasses.

The wine world is producing better wines than ever before. In regions where laws permit broad experimentation with growing and making red wines is resulting in rapid evolution and refinement of styles.

In countries like Australia, cooler climate reds are really making a name for themselves.

Gobally, there’s been a welcome shift away for cumbersome, overripe, high alcohol, oaky wines, to red wines made with more restraint and freshness.

This has long been one of Olivier Lamy’s finest reds, year in, year out. It comes from just under a hectare of vines on the lower slope of Derrière chez Edouard where the soils have more clay. The vines here are more than 50 years old and gift very small, ripe and intensely flavoured bunches that produce a deep and layered wine with pure, dark cherry fruit and plenty of spice. Divine Wine!

Domaine Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny Vielles Vignes 2017

A more elegant if not fresher nose reflects notes of dark cherry, earth and a touch of humus, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. Nervi-Conterno Gattinara 2020

Historically these wines have had Amazing transparency, sophistication shining though. Alto Piemonte saw another productive vintage in 2020 with no significant hail or frost events. Giovanni Rosso Barolo ‘Cerretta’ 2016

Nebbiolo | Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo

Owned by the Rosso family since 1920, the plot was partly replanted in 1984 and 2000. Situated about 2 miles (3km) to the north of Serralunga village, Cerretta lies close to the hamlet of Baudana and envelops that of Cerretta. The 2018 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a well-defined but stubbornly backward bouquet; perhaps this cuvée is beginning to close down as Moreau’s cellar cools in the winter. The palate is more expressive, offering chunky black fruit and even more peppery than the La Cardeuse due to the 50% whole bunch, although personally I might have dialed that down a little, as I find the finish a bit too stemmy at the moment. Incredible depth and layering of flavour. While it has the richness and intensity of Amarone it doesn’t have any jammy or sweet notes of lesser Amarone. Beautifully dry with fine acid tension, married to a dusting of equally fine tannins and a lucious fruit feel with a good hit of glycerol at play. Great intrigue, brooding, draws you in. Violets, blood orange, dried citrus peel on a core of dark fruits & chocolate. As it opens in the glass it comes together & alcohol falls into place.

Rounder, plusher than the 2016. A lovely differentiation between vintage that still sees the qualities of clearly very fine house at play. None of the reduction Meadows noted on first release is present now. A little more time is needed for this to show it’s full colours at the moment. A little more savoury with the same fruit energy at play. As seems to be the case for the Domaine there is a harmony that you don’t always see in Burgundy. Superb drinking.

Fascinating drinking here. More down the strawberry line. With excellent harmony. This is divine, violets and underlying savoury notes. Another excercise in textural difference. Arvelet so even fine and plush, derrière building in structure, Fremier super high quality tannins with a very slight mid-palate prominence and wonderful length of tannin. Drinking these wines side by side is a demonstration in the diversity of Pommard, a celebration of the differences between vineyards.
