Dönhoff Estate Riesling 2019

Riesling | Nahe, Germany

Wow! This takes refreshment to a new level! Lime fest with the zest! So many elements that you could choose to pull out, the pop of spice, hit of musk, the slatey phenolics, juicy acid, and multi-layered fruit. A superb, together Riesling. Dry and 11.5% making for a next-level thirst quencher. Great now, it will live for a long time, showing different personalities as it ages. If this what Dönnhoff have pulled off with the entry level gear, the top stuff is going to be insane. The Nahe re

Swinney Syrah 2021

Shiraz/Syrah | West Australia, Australia

Beautifully refined with vibrant fresh fruit. Excellent élévage and exceptional mouthfeel. Plush and delicately spiced with a satisfying generosity and balanced twist of whole bunch. "The 2021 Syrah is a haunting, glowing crimson in the glass. I love the tannins here—they're so good that they compel me to look beyond the fruit and to the structure, which is a rare occurrence. There are notes of pink peppercorns and Sichuan peppercorn, and the fruit has purity, clarity and a supple flo

Swinney Grenache 2021

Grenache | West Australia, Australia

Vibrant and elegant with fine, long tannins. Flint and slate marry perfume and violets. Gently flowing complex red fruits, with balanced harmonised acid. Layered savoury, earthy, saline. A success with loads of energy! The Swinney Grenache is grown on bush vines, on a northeast-facing slope in the gravels of Frankland River. It is so different from the wines produced in South Australia (McLaren Vale, Barossa, etc). I love the clarity and the bloodiness of the wine in this vintage. The tan

Swinney Mourvèdre 2021

Mourvèrdre | West Australia, Australia

Mouvèdre is more often seen as a blending component offering a superb perfume of violets and flowers, structured tannins yet not necessarily the overt fruit making it a perfect fit in a Grenache Shiraz Mouvèdre. Although I didn't get to try this wine the 2021 Swinney Mouvèdre demonstrated why a stand-alone version from this Frankland River version works. Australian wine often has opulent sweet fruit that needs taming, in this instance the fruit gives their Mouvèdre the missing link to making

Max Ferdinand Richter Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2017

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

Seriously! How often to Graacher and Wehlener just come up with the goods. This is a superb Kabinett.  It has that slide flinty, reductive edge, less so than Prüm's Graacher. Huge energy here with a sense of translucence somehow coming through over the divine fruits. Reminds me of Clemens Busch. It has incredible length, with a pinch of salt to finish. Refreshing, mouthwatering, succulent juice, just as a good Kabinett should be! From 70- to 80-year-old vines, the 2017 Graacher Himmelreich

Wine Decoded Yarra Valley Shiraz 2017

Shiraz/Syrah | Yarra Valley, Australia

Our 3rd and Best Release is Here! I'm quietly very happy with this one. As a passion project we had no commercial time constraints and were able to give this much more time maturing in barrel and then bottle prior to release, over 5 years prior to release. The end result is a wine of poise and balance. I reckon I've nailed it. Delicious, cool climate Shiraz with energy, vibrant fruit, layered savoury, earthy complexity with pops of spice. An underlying darkness, fine, long, plush and caressin

A.Rodda ‘Baxendale’ Whitlands Chardonnay 2022

Chardonnay | Victoria, Australia

The latest addition to Adrian's Chardonnay range. The Baxendale is supple plush, clean & long. For mine the most immediately approachable Australian Chardonnay just keeps getting better and better. Last year I was tasting a line of OK white Burgundy then moved onto A.Rodda's Chardonnays & BOOM! They're superb wines. The Baxendale is supple plush, clean & long. For mine the most immediately approachable. The acid a bit more resolved. Oak nicely balanced, edge of pithy stuff. Florals, c

An Icon!

Clonakilla O’Raida Shiraz 2021

Shiraz/Syrah | Murrumbatemen, ACT

A great introduction to Shiraz from Clonakilla & Murumbatemen, Canberra. Cool climate Shiraz with excellent texture and shape. Opulent & generous fruit, tamed by excellent tannins with an edge of playful grip and energetic acid. Plum and red fruit have spice, savoury, graphite, and that hallmark pepper playing around with florals making for an entrancing perfume. Delicious, complete, harmonious, and thirst-quenching!

Wendouree Muscat of Alexandria 2016 2017 2018

Muscat of Alexandria | South Australia, Australia

AP Birks Wendouree Cellars produce some of the very few wines I’ll buy without tasting! The wines are something special. A celebration of an incredible old vineyard with plantings from the late 1800s. Tony & Lita are custodians of something truly special! From Muscat vines planted in the 1940s. I grab a few bottles of this every now and then. It's a deliciously perfumed, sweet drink. Always vibrant and fresh, a lovely spice, and silvery line of bitterness. Put a few years of bottle a

Fritz Haag Riesling Braunberger-Juffer Kabinett 2020

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

Did somebody say aperitif? Effusive white-peach, honeysuckle and vanilla-bean aromas pour from the glass of this Kabinett. A very juicy wine with wonderful lightness and mineral freshness. An ideal partner for conversation. Stuart Piggot, Suckling

Pure with tension, balanced & rich with a refreshing textural acid. Mid-palate weight is excellent with layers of textural lees and funk ~ excellent! Chardonnay with flavour. Vigneti Massa Timorasso ‘Picolo Derthona’ 2022

Timorasso | Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

The Picolo Derthona is the new entry wine from Walter Massa! The best Piccolo Derthona to date. The perfect introduction to Timorasso. More development depth and length than previous iterations. Delicate, thirst-quenching refreshing, flowing through with a saline line. Perfectly weighted phenolic note. Lemon citrus oil with pear and melon.  Lush phenolic layer that is seamless and well integrated. Delicious!

Textural with clever use of oxidative handling to build intrigue whilst maintaining a core of vibrant fruit and mineral acidity. Citrus zest and oils with pears and a little candied ginger. White flowers dance over the top with a little savoury hit. Flowing and luscious, chalky, savoury, spiced, sapidity in a cleansing way. Plenty of intrigue and interest here. An exceptional introduction to Timorasso.

Selbach Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling 2017

Riesling | Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

This is a beauty, graceful with a certain transparency to it. The freshness, combined with excellent depth and length is classic Kabinett. Like Max F Richter, the use of large old wood for fermentation and maturation harmonises the wine beautifully. A joy to devour! “Great Mosel Kabinett should be like drinking cool spring water; thirst quenching and delicious.” Johannes Selbach

It's the texture and flow that separate Shaun's Dapple wines from others! Excellent density, line and length with chalky, mineral ,saline acid and succulent fruit. Serious mid-palate depth. Calm and patient winemaking showing. After 4 hours in the glass only a month after bottling, it starts to reveal itself. White flowers and that trademark lick of reduction wrap a core of fruit that shows depth only achieved with vine age. Let alone a 30% crop reduction.  Excellent flow.

Wagner-Stempel Riesling Porphyr 2017

Riesling | Siefersheim, Germany

Beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. We often get seduced by opulence. Daniel's 2015's from sites yielding some of the ripest fullest fruit in the Rheinhessen certainly have such seduction. The 2016 Porphyr, beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. Such a sophisticated wine of great line and length.
