Mouvèdre is more often seen as a blending component offering a superb perfume of violets and flowers, structured tannins yet not necessarily the overt fruit making it a perfect fit in a Grenache Shiraz Mouvèdre. Although I didn't get to try this wine the 2021 Swinney Mouvèdre demonstrated why a stand-alone version from this Frankland River version works. Mariotto's description of this wine 'Fresh and bringer of frestive cheer' is apt! A light, dry red that can be served just slightly chilled it makes for great summer drinking. The work done to offer us a fine dusting of long even tannins balanced to the fruit weight shows great touch. The fruit development along with the varietal characteristics yielding savoury, earthy notes with the little bit of rose and musk from Mariotto's tasting notes. A refreshing playful drink with plenty of intrigue.

A great introduction to Shiraz from Clonakilla & Murumbatemen, Canberra. Cool climate Shiraz with excellent texture and shape. Opulent & generous fruit, tamed by excellent tannins with an edge of playful grip and energetic acid. A ripping Picolo, semi-dried apricot, apricot kernel, baking spice with exceptional presence for a wine at this price point. Flowing and luscious with a sherberty refreshing acid, making for a thirst-quenching drink. A little creamy play adds richness and complexity. This is a beauty, graceful with a certain transparency to it. The freshness, combined with excellent depth and length is classic Kabinett. Like Max F Richter, the use of large old wood for fermentation and maturation harmonises the wine beautifully. Beautifully balanced, it rests toward the acid side of the scales, with a touch less alcohol, taming rich luscious fruits. We often get seduced by opulence. Daniel's 2015's from sites yielding some of the ripest fullest fruit in the Rheinhessen certainly have such seduction. NOTE on the 2022: An excellent follow up to the 2021. A slightly more generous iteration. All of the elements once again at play. Texture, clever use of oxidative handling to build intrigue whilst maintaining a core of vibrant fruit and mineral acidity. Citrus zest and oils with pears and a little candied ginger. The 2024 sees a fuller, more textural wine than the 2023. The more golden colour the first indication. Textural, every so slightly oily phenolics and a gentle oxidative hand yield a complex, intriguing wine. Jasmine and white flowers lift from the glass over spices, white stone fruit and a little something exotic. Viognier and Chenin feels are playing around the edges.
