At the risk of sounding like a broken record, once again the nose is overtly floral in character with its exuberantly spicy nose of various dark berries, soy, exotic tea and sandalwood. The sleek, intense and delineated flavors are at once refined yet powerful with a taut muscularity becoming more apparent on the dusty, youthfully austere and stony finish that is compact and very serious. A highly restrained and decidedly cool nose requires aggressive swirling to coax the wonderfully spicy red pinot fruit, floral and exotic tea scents from the glass. On the palate the super-refined, energetic and well-detailed middleweight flavors possess a lilting, pure and highly refined mouthfeel thanks primarily to the beautifully fine-grained tannins supporting the striking long, balanced and lightly austere finale. An even spicier nose reflects notes of exotic black tea, dark cherry, incense, hoisin, plum liqueur and a broad range of floral elements. The gorgeously textured medium weight flavors are once again not especially dense yet manage to display impressive power on the dusty, compact and hugely long finish, indeed this offers the best persistence in the entire range. "The 2013 Salon is a huge wine. Dense and explosive, the 2013 possesses almost shocking textural richness for a young Salon. “The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet that blossoms in the glass. Dark cherries, touches of violet and iodine just soar with aeration—wonderfully delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins and a killer line of acidity, very harmonious through the linear and poised finish. This is quite understated for an RSV. The 2019 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is the best Barbaresco I have ever tasted from Vietti. Bright, full of energy, the 2019 is stunning from the very first taste, and it was poured after all the Barolos in the range. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, mint and orange peel all grace this exquisite, mind-blowing Barbaresco. The 2019 is pure and total finesse. Pretty, red fruit. Beautifully developed. Impeccable élévage. An underlying tar/leather/slate notes layering in intriguing complexity. The Vietti crew have built quite a lot of structure into this Ravera of Novello. A wonderful example of Ravera making for a very complex iteration. Lovely generosity. Fine plush Neb tannin. Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo
While Vietti's Villero is their Top Wine. This is my favorite! The 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is elegant, floral and lifted. I also find it a bit reticent in the early going. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, white pepper and spice open with some coaxing. Much more impact at the front end of the palate with a pleasing build in grip compared to the plush Brunate. Linear, long and fine. Lovely flowers. Long, even fruit of significant depth, with a lick of leather throwing in tar/slate/licorice complexity. Opening the class to reveal more opulence. Acid tannin complex is exceptional. Cracking Brunate! A very complete wine. Tannins are so refined, even through the front and middle palate. Round chocolateyt mid-palate that tapers a little. “The 2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked on the final day of harvest with the Les Suchots. It matured in 40% new oak like the Premier Crus, two of the five barrels. The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth.
