Tasted next to the 2020 vintage, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2019 Barolo Monprivato delivers a much darker and richer presentation of fruit. You get freshness and brightness with Bing cherry, cassis and dried pomegranate. The 2019 vintage is clearly more complex and offers more overall depth. As Elena Mascarello tells me, "2020 is all light, and 2019 leans into darkness." The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. This was one of the few wines in the line-up to display any appreciable reduction and in this case it's enough to mask the underlying fruit. The suave, round and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing texture yet there is good underlying power to the acceptably long and complex finale. The 2020 Barolo Rupestris is elegant, sculpted wine. It shows the mid-weight structure of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, orange peel and dried flowers open with some coaxing. I would leave this alone in the cellar for a few years, as time in bottle is essential here.
