The Marienburg Fahrlay 2022 >reserve<, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, displays a superbly fresh and precise nose of lemon, candied grapefruit, minty herbs, greengage, spearmint, bergamot, lavender, lime tree, and jasmine. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a spice box, bursting from the glass with a tour de force of cloves, cinnamon sticks, mint, lavender, dried strawberries and freshly sliced vanilla bean. For all of its extroverted character on the nose, this is a delicate beauty on the palate, cool-toned and finessed, with violet-tinged red berries and exotic spice motivated by brisk acidity. Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany
The Fuligni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its smooth integration of aromas and the carefully balanced intensity achieved here, which shows momentum but also remains very fine and nuanced. There are many sides to the bouquet with wild fruit, cassis, crushed stone, candied orange and fresh herbs or rosemary. A floral note also appears that suggests rose or iris root. With its decidedly green and spicy bouquet, the 2022 Pecorino is impossible to ignore. Lime zest and tropical melon give way to crushed Granny Smith apples and chamomile aromas. This is beautifully balanced, fruit-centric and intense. Silken waves of citrus-infused orchard fruits cascade beneath an air of sweet inner florals. The 2022 leaves the palate completely refreshed, tapering off long and youthfully tense, with a hint of salinity that adds lovely punctuation. Fantastic. Drink 2024-202
Pinot Noir from Pommard, Côte du Beaune
Rounder, plusher than the 2016. A lovely differentiation between vintage that still sees the qualities of clearly very fine house at play. None of the reduction Meadows noted on first release is present now. A little more time is needed for this to show it’s full colours at the moment. A little more savoury with the same fruit energy at play. As seems to be the case for the Domaine there is a harmony that you don’t always see in Burgundy. Superb drinking.

A mildly toasty nose is comprised by notes of red and dark cherry, raspberry and newly turned earth. The rich and caressing medium weight flavors are at once succulent but powerful while delivering fine length on the decidedly firm but not really austere finale. Fascinating drinking here. More down the strawberry line. With excellent harmony. This is divine, violets and underlying savoury notes. Another excercise in textural difference. Arvelet so even fine and plush, derrière building in structure, Fremier super high quality tannins with a very slight mid-palate prominence and wonderful length of tannin.Drinking these wines side by side is a demonstration in the diversity of Pommard, a celebration of the differences between vineyards.

A cooler and quite pretty nose combines notes of plum, red and dark raspberry along with spice and floral top notes. The finer and more seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. A brooding and still very primary nose offers up liqueur-like notes of dark cherry, raspberry, anise and a hint of wood. There is excellent verve to the utterly delicious flavors that also possess excellent delineation before concluding in a mineral-laden and sneaky long finale. The 2021 Barolo Ravera is captures all the signatures of this site. Iron, white pepper, sage, mint, chalk and red-toned fruit all grace this sculpted, vibrant young Barolo. I especialy admire its energy and tension. Clean mineral notes support the bracing finish. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2021 for at least a few years. The 2021 Barolo Prapò is fabulous. It offers up an exotic mix of dark fruit, lavender, graphite, plum and scorched earth, with firm, muscular Serralunga tannins to back it all up. Readers will have to be patient with the 2021. It's a superb wine in the making, but very much a Serralunga Barolo that needs time to blossom.
