Fenocchio's Castellero comes from a cooler site east facing site. With similar soils to Cannubi. Darker fruited than Cannubi. Ripe, layered, nutty tannins, with an elegant, composed wine with a dark edge, lovely acidity support perfectly weighted core of fruit with a balanced richness. Claudio's preference is to harvest on the earlier side, whilst making sure the tannins are suitably ripe for the vintage. One of Leroux’s close friends owns these vines in the heart of the 1er Cru on the east-facing Beaune side of Savigny. The most elegant Savigny wines tend to come from this area, so it is perfect for powerful years. Like most Côte d’Or terrain, the soils are clay/limestone, but the clay is light and sandy. Chenin. Take the syrup from poached quince and mix it with Créme pâtissière. Entrancing. Lovely, feel like I’m cooking quince. Long fine, excellent acid, draws you in, alive with personality. Bone dry! Phenolics here are interesting, dusty rather than oily. They have a wonderful cleansing feel. Savory with a little oxidative character just enough to add intrigue. Fun. Very good.
