Description

The Laffay’s own 26 ares in the Grand Cru Vaudésir. We were offered a tiny allocation of this; none of their Bourgros as they could not make any in 2019. Vaudésir is one of the seven Chablis Grand Cru appellations. Nestled in a natural amphitheater, it covers 15.4 hectares. It benefits from a double exposure similar to that of Valmur. The south-facing slope, which lies in a small sheltered valley, provides optimal ripening conditions. The north-facing slope, however, is cooler and the grapes often mature later. Vaudésir contains a significant amount of clay. The subsoil remains classic, however, with Kimmeridgian marly limestone.

Haven’t had a chance to try this one yet. Given we’re already 5 for 5 from the rest of the range I reckon it’ll be a might fine beverage!

About Domaine Thierry Laffay

Established in 1978, this small high-quality under-the-radar Domaine has been managed by Thierry Laffay since 1985. Laffay farms 7 hectares of vineyards over seven excellent appellations.

We don’t have lot of info about Thierry, what we do have is a row of glasses full of tasty vino! That’s what we’re sticking with!

Laffay’s wines are steeped in the typicity of the terroir thanks to simplicity and limited handling. The Laffay wines display the taut, rocky and steely Chablis classism of yesteryear, not dissimilar to the wines of Vincent Dauvissat who I have been visiting annually since 1995

In the Vineyard

They are mostly organic citing that their viticultural practices are those of reasoned cultivation, lutte raisonnée, being scrupulously applied avoiding systematic treatments and intervening only in the event of a major disease risk. Vine age averages between 40 and
50 years, grapes are harvested by hand.

In the Winery

Indiginous yeasts commence fermentations; the wines are aged for a minimum of 9 months in stainless steel or enameled steel vats (3 small vats). After the alcoholic fermentation, the wines remain on the lees and resume malolactic fermentation the following spring.

A beauty close to perfection. It displays intense, perfectly ripe, healthy and refined raisin fruit on the nose along with tropical hints, herbal notes and dashes of lemon juice, while the stony/mineral expressions remain rather in the background but still add excitement and distinction. Max Ferdinand Richter Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2017

Seriously! How often to Graacher and Wehlener just come up with the goods. This is a superb Kabinett.  It has that slide flinty, reductive edge, less so than Prüm's Graacher. Huge energy here with a sense of translucence somehow coming through over the divine fruits. Reminds me of Clemens Busch. It has incredible length, with a pinch of salt to finish. DRY
The 2017 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Raffes is the essence of gray slate. Bright in color and flavors but also intense and intermixed with lemon-fresh stony notes, this is a concentrated yet pure, fresh and finessed, highly intense and refined Riesling with great length and an endless finish. This is a powerful but Auslese-styled Riesling with concentration, finesse and lots of power but no alcoholic impression. The wine was bottled with 13% alcohol and almost nine grams of residual sugar.
