This such a fun wine. Long supple. Very together. Great purity and enchanting secondary characters from a well-executed élévage. Such a supple, generous wine. Savoury and earthy with a delightful perfume the wafts above. An absolutely cracking Serralunga. Picked at just the right time. This is such good drinking now.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

Today Ferdinado is 40 years old and he runs a winery of 15 total hectars in Monforte and Serralunga but you can still notice in his eyes the same hardening, a sane wild restlessness and the same passion of that young guy. The passion he has in telling this piece of land and the care that he reserves to it is evident in his every single gesture. Visiting the vineyards the attention he pays to them is astonishing, so rigorous, looking for the most naturality possible, with many experimentations trying to reduce the use even of that products admitted by biologic farming, as copper and sulfur.

Ferdinando produces three labels of Barolo. The first is Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba, that comes from younger vines of Boscareto single vineyard, very important cru that is just next the Francia vineyard, father of the legendary Barolo Monfortino. Is the most immediate between his Barolos, not needing a very long aging, but also with a lot of elegance, complexity and character. The grapes pressed ferment without the inoculum of yeast and without  sulfur dioxide from 40 to 90 days depending to the vintages. The aging of 36 months is spent in slavonian oak barrel of 30 hectoliters and than in the 20.000 bottles produced.

Barolo Serralunga DOCG2015

The Barolo Serralunga comes from a 3.5 hectare area of Ferdinando’s youngest Nebbiolo vines (about 25 years old), in the valley of Boscareto in the Serralunga d’Alba subzone of Barolo. Hand selected fruit in early October, natural fermentation with no added sulfur, and 24 months in large Slavonic oak casks (20 & 40 HL); the wine is then bottled and rests for 1 year before release.  A gorgeous earthy aroma rises from the glass, and is echoed on the palate with mushrooms, forest floor, pine resin, black cherry, wild strawberry, mint, and orange zest.  A wine with such lovely balance, high acidity and gripping yet soft tannins, it is built to age for years to come, or be able to enjoy now with some decanting.  The Serralunga is ideal with intense vegetable dishes, hearty meat courses, salumi, and strong cheeses.

Ferdinando Principiano is part of the next generation in Barolo who are guaranteeing that our kids and grandkids are ensured a supply of brilliant wines  In around 2008 Ferdinando completely changed course from making full-on modern style wine to full-on traditional wines, which is a courageous move under any circumstance, and one which is yielding beautiful wines. And beautiful vines: his vineyards are also gorgeous.

The Barolo is a blend of fruit from Boscaretto, Baudana, and Leirano – all Serralunga vineyards.

The 2015 Vintage in Barolo

An exceptional vintage thanks to healthy grapes and exceptionally regular bunches. A very cold winter with plenty of snow and a protracted cool and rainy spring replenished the water tables, much needed during a July. The vintage shows great promise. Jancis Robinson

The full capability of the Nebbiolo grape’s expressive nature is alive in Barolo 2015 and it is a vintage to really celebrate. In general, the wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine and powerful tannins. They are toned, muscular and athletic, coupled with freshness, a keen sense of focus, great length, and an astute balance.

These wines also have the great fortune of offering instant appeal as well as more in-depth attraction, which is the hallmark of a truly great vintage. These wines will satisfy both the experienced palate and educated connoisseur. They are also very expressive and show strong typicity by communes and also single vineyards. But if there was one attribute to single out, it is the way in which these wines combine power with elegance. They are thrilling to taste. James Suckling
