Description

Mid-Weight presence with generosity. Good solids work adding some funk. Nice bit of textural phenolics. Lamy with more phenolics. Transparent and lythe. Lovely bit of spice. Playful, and layered. Harmony. Extra time sees beautiful resolution to the wine. Deceptive depth and length.

Why is this Wine so Yummy?

About Domaine Marc-Collin

“Marc Colin is one of the best growers in the Côte de Beaune, perhaps to Saint Aubin what Jean-Marc Roulot is to Meursault. And you can quote me on that.” Neal Martin

The Domaine was created in 1970 by Marc Colin and his wife Michèle. They began with some 6 hectares of vineyards that had been in the family for over a century and added some more along the journey. Today Joseph, Caroline, and Damien, the children of Marc and Michele, own and run the domaine this 19-hectare Domaine concentrated in and around Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet. The fourth sibling Pierre-Yves (who made the wine at Marc Colin for 10 years) established his own project in 2005. They are flavoresome and complex with tension and detail and in today’s Burgundy market they represent excellent value.

In the Vineyard

Vineyards are farmed lutte raisonnée with some experimentation en culture biologique. Their wines distinctly represent their place with purity, harmony and complexity.

In the Winery

The one big thing to note is an élévage of 15 months. Seeing the wine through two winters in barrel works wonders harmonising Burgundian Chardonnay particularly when the acid profile & freshness of fruit is there to support the time.

The 2015 Vintage at Domaine Marc-Collin

From Burghound – Joseph Colin described 2015 as a vintage that “surprised us with its freshness given the very hot growing season and high fruit maturities. The season itself was relatively straightforward with no major problems to speak of and we began picking on the first of September and brought in super-clean and ripe fruit that averaged around 13% in terms of potential alcohols. From the very beginning our goal was to preserve as much freshness as we could and to this end we avoided stirring the lees, limited new wood to a maximum of 25% and in many cases we employed foudres that hold up to 30 hl. [A foudre of 30 hl is the equivalent of 13 regular Burgundian barrels.] Among our various terroirs I would say that those in St. Aubin were particularly successful and this is probably due to the fact that it was a bit cooler compared to Chassagne and Puligny.” The domaine made wonderful 2014s and it has followed that success with some wonderful 2015s, many of which are worth considering. The 2015s were bottled between August 2016 and January 2017 using Diam 30 composite corks.

89-91 Points

The 2015 Saint Aubin la Fontenotte, which sees a maximum 10% new oak and 30% aged in oak foudres, has a lovely pine needle, citrus fruit and nectarinescented bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with judicious use of oak that lends this Saint Aubin hints of brioche and vanilla without impeding upon the terroir expression. After a couple of minutes, I noticed an oyster shell tincture developing back on the aromatics. This is an intriguing Saint Aubin that probably touches premier cru quality.
