“A fresh, pure and relatively high-toned nose is comprised of wild red currant, soft spice, rose petal and an agreeably subtle hint of wood. The sense of refinement continues onto the equally pure and well-detailed medium weight flavors that possess a beautifully textured mouthfeel, all wrapped in a persistent finish that is firm but not so much so that this could not be approached young. With that said, this could use better depth so at least a few years of keeping would be my recommended app

“Here the timid nose is more deeply pitched still with its array of plum, dark currant, humus and just turned earth. There is at once excellent volume as well as a refined texture to the utterly delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors that flash evident minerality on the bitter pit fruit-suffused finish. This firm effort needs to develop better depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur." ♥ Outstanding Allen Meadows, Burghound 91-93 Points

An exuberantly spicy and overtly floral nose is airy, cool and elegant. Unlike some of the other reds in the range with very low yields, the mouthfeel of the mediumbodied flavors reflects the expected density while remaining sophisticated, refined and classy on the beautifully persistent, mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. This is terrific and should age effortlessly. 2033+ Sweet spot Outstanding ♥Allen Meadows, Burghound 92-94 Points WK 92-94

“The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's  medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. Boillot observes, and I agree, that this site's tannins have become much more refined over the last five years.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 93 Points JM 91-93

“The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles is sensual and charming, bursting from the glass with aromas of plums, raw cocoa, sweet spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's lively and textural, with a broad attack and a long, expansive finish.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points  JM 90-93

Powerful and muscular, the 2020 Volnay Vieilles Vignes is richer than the ethereal Clos de la Cave, offering up aromas of sweet cherries, plum compote, licorice and spices. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it’s broad shouldered and fleshy, with lively acids and a long, expansive finish. Drink 2030-2050 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 92 Points

A relatively high-toned and more elegant nose features notes of red currant, cherry, raspberry and a hint of lavender. The super-sleek, indeed almost lacy middle weight flavors display more minerality if less density before terminating in a lingering finish that tightens up noticeably on the dusty and mildly austere finale.Allen Meadows

An exotically spicy and broadly floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by ripe plum and black cherry scents. The super-sleek and highly energetic medium weight flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressive minerality on the precise, intense, balanced and lingering finish that, like the Bousse d’Or, would benefit from better depth. Even so, this is very classy juice with the aging potential to match. (Monopole) 2034+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound (92-94
A perfumed and exceptionally pretty, elegant and pure nose speaks of wafting essence of red berries, especially cherry, along with exotic spice and floral wisps. I very much like the texture of the beautifully refined middleweight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that displays excellent length. This could use better depth but that should only be a matter of patience. 2034+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound  (91-94) Point

This is also aromatically cool but ripe and spicy though in this case the red and dark raspberry scents are notably more floral in character. The delicious, intense and well-detailed lighter weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts with the moderately austere and quite firm finale where a touch of sweetness gradually emerges. 2030+Allen Meadows, Burghound

“The 2021 Pommard 1er Cru Les Croix Noires is terrific, bursting with aromas of wild plums, dark berries, warm spices and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with an almost unctuous core of fruit that reflects the low yields of the vintage, underpinned by sweet, powdery tannins, it's built for the long haul.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 94 Points JM 91-93

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2020

Pinot Noir | Volnay, Côte du Beaune

‘Mitans’ derives from the old French for centre, and this is likely the source of the name as this Cru lies at the heart of the appellation (on the slopes beneath the village). This 0.65-hectare parcel is close to the Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and encroaches into the Mitans l’Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil here is fine clay shot through with limestone, and the vines are, on average, 50 years old. Just a pinch of whole bunch this year. Les Mitans is considered one of the most elegan
