Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

L'Aietta  Rosso di Montalcino was first produced in 2005 after Francesco began his foray into wine making with his Brunello in 2001.  The wine is produced from a rented parcel in Castelnuovo Dell'Abate, fermented in steel, and raised in Slavonian oak for 1 year.

Fontodi Chiant Classico 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Chianti Classico

The thirst-quenching nature combined with great intensity and personality draws you in!  More elegance than 18 looking good. Refined fun. With lovely red fruits, earthy, savoury with a little herbal pop. Pretty bloody serious Sangiovese for the coin. A very clever layer of oak in this. Complex with fine tannins with a slight build to mid-palate that’s going to work beautifully with loads of food. This should be very interesting with 5-10 years of age on it.

Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

Speller is on the money, this is still closed (April 2023). Builds with time in the glass, the fruit leans toward the fine Burgundian style. The tannins are just a little edgy, as with the Brunello, as the new Botti season future vintages should see further refinement to the texture.  This clearly sits in between the Rosso & Brunello level. I like the cranberry descriptor and would add a musk and rose top note. A few years in bottle should see the tannins resolve fully and mid-palate weight

Conti Costanti Rosso di Montalcino 2019
A True Baby Brunello!

Conti Costanti Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

A pretty handy Rosso resting a small step away from heading into the next league. This needs time by the 4th and 5th day the full potential of this Baby Brunello was on full display. Dark cherry, fresh blackberry fruit with an earthy feel, a little dried orange peel, plush long tannins. Layered in spices rolling through, exceptional length and depth. There's been a bump in price here, if I were to taste it blind I would say it was excellent value. Comparative youth aside in a couple of years if

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino 2020

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Italy

This would have to be the single best value Brunello I've tried in the last few years. I still vividly remember the first release of this wine I drank, the 2016. Straight out of the gate this is just beautiful. The harmony and complexity match a plush, fine mouthfeel of divine tannins. Generosity meets restraint in a beautiful place. Layered with red fruits, darker fruits, a little perfume over earthiness, baking spices, woody herbs, and much, much more. This would have to be the single best

Fèlsina Chianti Classio Riserva DOCG ‘Rancia’ 2017

Sangiovese | Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can't wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.

Tenuta di Carleone ‘Il Guercio’ 2021

Sangiovese | Tuscany, Chianti Classico

Named after a Tuscan word for "one-eyed rascal," the Tenuta di Carleone 2021 Il Guercio (in a bottle with a white wax capsule) is all Sangiovese with up to 40% whole cluster and as a much as five months of extended maceration in cement vats only. The wine delivers a very clear and variety-faithful expression with bright plum, wild cherry and iris root. You can taste the artisanal approach of this pretty wine. There are dusty limestone sensations that add to a cooling finish. Fruit comes from

Castell’In Villa Chianti Classico Riserva 2013

Sangiovese | Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy

A Level Up from the Incredibly Good Chianti Classico! No wonder Walter Speller has it in his Top 5 Chianti Wines! There's a big difference between the mouthfeel of Sangiovese for Montalcino and Chianti. Just like this one Sangio from Chianti tends to have line and length of tannin similar to that of varietals like Cabernet, all the way along your palate. Sangio from Montalcino tends to have broader mouther filling tannins, not necessarily bigger or more tannic, just covering the width of your to

The first wine I tried from the Cigliano di Sopra was the 2021 Classico. It's a bloody tasty expression of Sangiovese. It shows a hell of a lot of comfort and clarity of thought in their winemaking from this young duo. They are at the forefront of a new wave like Carleone pushing hard to drive Chianti to new height. Think harmony, balance, grape first, fun wine. The Riserva is looking very sharp. All of the hallmarks of the Classico levelled up. Old school Chianti Classico Riservas are often ov
