Red Blend from Alfaro, La Rioja
Complete liking this the shape, flow, development and harmony are impressive. Very complete super fine long tannins with personality. Excellent flavour profile with a little baking spice. Freshness and energy here, signing. Plush, fine and delicious.I was really taken by the 2020 Propiedad, a pale and bright ruby-colored wine with subtleness and elegance despite its 14.5% alcohol. The old vines are a majority of Garnacha and maybe 8% other varieties. The wine is floral, with notes of sto
Red Blend from Amandi, Ribeira Sacra
At 400-450 metres' altitude, Meixeman is a 1.2 hectare plot of very old organically grown vines from a 'two-faced' vineyard: the larger part is relatively coolly oriented slate facing south-east; the other is warmer iron-rich granitic soil facing south-west. This 'heritage vineyard' was replanted after phylloxera in 1907 by Pedro's grandmother, using remnants of the site's own genetics which survived the pestilence. The grapes are foot-trodden, 40% whole bunch, 16 days maceration on skins and st
Monastrell from Penedès, Catalunya
Higher elevation and shift in soil offer a more vertical and mineral style.Xarel-Lo’s gentle bitterness is a perfect balancing agent where acid may be more prominent in Champagne, a lacing of phenolics and elegant bitterness work beautifully in Recaredo’s Corpinnats.Again the oxidative bruised apple and Vino di Pasto cereal flavours come out to play with green leafy herbs. There’s loads of energy and tension as fragrant and perfumed notes come out to play. Beautifully textured
Urbina's 2004 Gran Reserva shows excellent development. One of those wines that requires some patience in the glass, building freshness with the passing of time. At the core fresh vibrant fruit and zippy acidity are at play. A little reduction blows of to reveal wonderful savoury flavours and an excellent mouthfeel with playful grip. A little sappiness and wild edge adding complexity.Loads of fun to be had here!Deep garnet. Aromas of ripe red berries, cherry pit and succulent herbs a
The first of the La Rioja Alta wines to receive Gran Reserva status. With last year's release, I didn't feel the quality difference from the Ardanza justified stocking another wine. With the release of the 2017 Arana we see a build in sophistication and restraint over the 2019 Ardanza. The additional age showing through in a more resolved wine. High-toned, greater integration of oak playing much more subtly, a lacing of American oak and texturally much more refined. Energy, freshness mainta
Red Blend from La Rioja, Spain
The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium-bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic-refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia. Tasted May 2025 Drink 2025-2055
Palomino from Jerez de la Frontera, Anadlucía
Caberrubia is Bodegas Luis Pérez's answer to NV Grand Cru Champagne! 'Caberrubia' is the name of a local bird which has returned to these vineyards since they were converted to organics. All natural alcohol. It's saline, iodine, balsamic, deeply chalky, deeply savoury, rich with balancing bitterness. Drinking it is like skiing down an intermediate slope, deep and winding but not too rushed, there's heaps of time to explore the chalk and every delicate switch and fold of texture and flavour.
Garnatxa from Gratallops, Priorat
The 2019 of this wine was the 1st Priorat from Àlvaro Palacios I devoured, it started my mission to drink more of Àlvaro's Priorats. It my friends was excellent. So fine and long, great persistence, harmony and intrigue. Poise, balance, complexity and personality. Bright fruits with mineral acid. Slatey, earthy, savour with some darker fruits. Inredible vitality, such sublte energetic fruit.Tasting the 2021 I found myself immediately enamoured, all the hallmarks of great Priorat seen in th
Red Blend from Gratallops, Priorat
Excellent. So fine and long, great persistence, harmony and intrigue. Poise, balance, complexity and personality. Bright fruits with mineral acid. Slatey, earthy, savour with some darker fruits. Inredible vitality, such sublte energetic fruit.Paul KaanInitially quite a mineral nose with a blend of earth and gun smoke, this gives way to concentrated layers of red and black cherry, blueberry yoghurt and liquorice spice. The palate is bright and full-bodied, with firm savoury tannins an
White Wine from Valdeorras, Galicia
Huge jump in depth and length over the 'Loura'. A layer of oxidative development adding complexity to the fruit weight. A more refreshing mouthfeel along combines with a step up in salinity. The nutty, lees complex a faintly toasty line. The core of citrus rind / oil fruit easily holding its own. Excellent balance and expression. A complete harmonious wine without artefact. Drinks beautifully with a day open. A little baking spice. Loads of nuance. Seriously sharp wine. The 2022 As Sortes
Red Blend from Alavesa, La Rioja
The flow, harmony, fine long fruit and acid entranced. An edgy grip works well in a cleansing way. Super juicy, fine, refreshing with so much energy, vibrant and long. This will settle into something delicious. Savoury, meaty play going on, building into some forest floor. Tightly wound with plenty more to come. This is well worth having a look at, a demonstration of the new Rioja!El Escolladero is a vineyard planted in 1950 in the village of Ábalos at 660 meters in altitude. As with mo
