The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is a powerful, tightly wound wine full of Monforte tension. Readers will have to be patient. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and sage add layers of aromatic intrigue to this firm, hulky Barolo. 'The 2019 Barolo Gramolere (with 7,000 bottles made) shows a slightly sweeter and riper fruit profile. This wine comes from the village of Monforte d'Alba, which is known for more structured and powerful wines compared to Verduno (where this winery is based), which offers lighter, more floral wines instead. Gramolere shows dark fruit, plum and spice, but it also has a pretty mineral note of rust or iron. However, within this portfolio, this wine may well deliver the longest drinking window.' Dri

The 2021 Bussia Vigna Fantini is a deep, powerful wine. Dark cherry, spice, menthol and strong balsamic inflections all meld together. This especially virile, strapping Barolo packs a serious punch. Time in the glass brings out Bussia breadth as spiced, floral aromatics literally explode on the finish. This is a tremendous debut. From a vineyard site in Monforte d'Alba, the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo Gramolere (with 7,000 bottles produced) shows a little more structure and power with tightly knit fruit, dark plum, ferrous earth and licorice. This vineyard comes to family ownership via the matriarch, Flavia Manzone, who was born in this village. Polished tannins push a smooth-sailing mouthfeel. The 2021 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a deep, powerful wine. In most vintages, the Gavarini Chiniera is a bit more linear, but the 2021 has an extra kick of textural depth that is such a hallmark of the year. Iron, chalk, dried flowers, mint and red cherry fruit build with a bit of coaxing. You will find a potent, explosive Barolo that hits all the right notes.Antonio Galloni 97 Points

The 2021 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is fabulous. Bright and transparent, with captivating depth, the 2021 is a stunning beauty. Enveloping balsamic notes make a strong opening statement that remains a theme here. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and blood orange all come alive in the glass. This one's another argument for blending sites! From a disciple of Maria Theresa Mascarello! Manly worked with Sandrone, Cavallotto and Altare before an extended stint with Maria-Therese Mascarello. When you look at these wineries the diversity of practices they employ, it makes for an exception foundation of experience to launch your own label as Alan did in 2015. From what I've tasted thus far it's only a matter of time before these wines reach the cult status of his peers.

There are many tightly coiled wines at this point that will need time to build generosity. Manley's M8 is one of the highlights of my tasting thus far. Perno, always the darkest and most structured on release, is perhaps the wine in the Sordo Cru lineup that goes through the most dramatic metamorphosis with time. Monforte is the least defined of the Barolo Communes, the end result is a diversity of styles. Barolo from Monforte can have incredible power, darknesss and earthiness, less reliant on fruit than other communes, in recent times we have soon producers making finer, elegant, perfumed iterations.
