Burgundy

Burgundy, the mythical home of wines made from Pinot Noir & Chardonnay … don’t forget AligotéGammay too!

Located in the middle of France on the eastern side. There is no other wine region that has been defined in such incredible detail. Each vineyard has been named and classified. Within these vineyards their are also Lieux Dits  referring to a specific part of a vineyard or region recognized for its own topographic or historical specificities.

This detailed definition allows for the equally detailed exploration of terroir. Hereditary tittle law in France has seen vineyards split between siblings generation after generation. Many incredibly small parcels producing only enough grapes to yield a single barrel of wine exist. This further extends our ability to see terroir in action vs the hand of the maker with many of the great vineyards having dozens of owners each producing minuscule volumes of wine.

The opportunity to taste them side by side is becoming increasingly difficult as scarcity drives prices up!

The most famous and coveted wines are the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of the Côte de Nuits and Côte du Beaune. Together they form a narrow escarpment running north-south over a distances of less than 50kms.

Much further north the Chardonnay from Chablis stands comfortably on it’s own two feet with some delicious mineral, fine wines with insane ability to age.

To the south excellent wines are produced in the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais, home to Chardonnays of exceptional value & personality.

Further again the Gammay from Beaujolais represents some of the beast value wines from Burgundy.

We’ve shared a series of articles in the Wine Bites Mag “Getting Your Head Around Burgundy” deep diving into the region.

Where marginal climate saw a high proportion of tough vintages in Burgundy. In ability to rippen grapes is less often a problem today. Catastrophic frosts and hail storms more of an issue.

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault ‘Limozin’ 2023

Chardonnay | Meursault, Burgundy

From lower down the slope, the 2023 Meursault Le Limozin is more exotic, bursting with aromas of honeyed orchard fruit, orange oil and musky peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered palate that's pure and enveloping, concluding with a saline finish. William Kelly, The Wine Advocate 90-92 PointsNaturally exotic aromas are comprised by notes of jasmine tea, acacia and freshly sliced pear. There is more volume, if less minerality, to the generously proportioned and be

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Cailloux JEROBOAM 3L 2023
Ridiculous Yields!
Of the two Bellevue Cuvées, the Cailloux has better balance and energy with a touch less alcohol and a touch more acid. Excellent darker, earthier profile than the Chiroubles. Beautifully weighted, plump fruit with a spice layer and just a little playful stalk tannin grip keeping the palate lively and, with that fine line of acid, refreshing. Any excellent rendition and like the other 2023's more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18

Dense yet fresh, elegant and fine. Graphite tannins and lovely vibrant red fruit. Sensational texture. Fine cleansing acid, long, delicious and delicately spiced. Beautiful. Juicy fruit with a much more immediate approachability than previous vintages. I typically find Bouland's wines need at least 18 months to 2 year to resolve and for their tension to relax following bottling. This will undoubtedly offer more with time in bottle.

An exotically spicy and broadly floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by ripe plum and black cherry scents. The super-sleek and highly energetic medium weight flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressive minerality on the precise, intense, balanced and lingering finish that, like the Bousse d’Or, would benefit from better depth. Even so, this is very classy juice with the aging potential to match. (Monopole) 2034+ ♥ Sweet spot OutstandingAllen Meadows, Burghound (92-94
Opens with juicy crunchy fruit that takes just a little while to settle in. More immediately overt than the others. There’s a build in tannin here that when you relate it back to the vineyard location near Rugien and listen to Anne Parents thoughts on Pommard makes sense. A certain savoury meatiness comes through. You can see this will need a little more time in bottle to really come together. Excellent depth and length of fruit as seems to be the case with all of Thierry’s wines.

Where the Bourgogne is immediately approachable the village Chassagne Blanc needs a little more time. 1/3 from Les Masures next to Morgeot 2/3 Puligny side of Chassagne. Again this shows a wonderful progression through the quality standards in Burgundy. Jumping a rung in the ladder, the energy and precision is showing here. Whilst a full percentage lower in alcohol than the Bourgogne, it has greater depth and length. Current tightly wound, beautiful linear acid is supported nicely by a little te

Where the Bourgogne is immediately approachable the village Chassagne Blanc needs a little more time. The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc opens in the glass with aromas of pear, hazelnut and nutmeg, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and lively palate that's quite generous and fruit-driven this year, though I suspect it will tighten up with a second winter on the lees. 1/3 from Les Masures next to Morgeot 2/3 Puligny side of Chassagne. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate 89-91 Points

Check out Burghound's review! Laurent Ponsot has farmed a tiny 0.31 of a hectare in Chambolle since 2002. The Domaine Ponsot bottling was called Cuvée des Cigales and, in spite of our protestations, the wine from this vineyard has never made the trip to Australia—until now. Burghound must have tasted this at a different stage to us as what we encountered was a beautifully rich and layered red Chambolle that was at the same time classically detailed and floral, yet with the opulence and text

This possesses the most floral-suffused nose in the range with its pretty liqueur-like aromas of various red berries, soft earth and a hint of crushed anise. There is excellent volume to the caressing and seductively textured flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere, firm and compact finale. Like the Caillerets, this needs more depth so at least some patience is in order.Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-92 Points
